At the ATP Rotterdam, World No.3 Daniil Medvedev faced off against Dusan Lajovic. Unfortunately, the Russian lost the match but during the battle, he played a very unusual shot that got the attention of Serena Williams’ coach Patrick Mouratoglou.
When he was a set down, Medvedev was engaged in a rally that forced him to play a backhand at the service line. As he played the shot, Daniil rotated in such a way that his back faced the net. Luckily, Lajovic missed the next shot giving him the point
The Russian’s shot isn’t very common in tennis. In fact, many would discourage it as the player loses sight of the ball completely. However, Patrick found it very interesting and he called it a UTShowdown shot (his exhibition event). Check it out.

The last few months were amazing for Medvedev. He won the Paris Masters, ATP Finals, and the ATP Cup. In addition to that, he also reached his 2nd Grand Slam final at the Australian Open. Totally, he won 20 matches in a row which was absolutely amazing.
Clearly, the Russian was incredible form and hence, he had high expectations at Rotterdam. He was looking to reach the final as it would help him jump to No.2 in the rankings, overtaking Rafael Nadal. However, that didn’t happen as he was knocked by Dusan Lajovic 7-6, 6-4.
This was a disappointing loss for Daniil but he still has the opportunity to move up in the rankings. There are still many more events like the Dubai Open left in March. In addition to that, the Miami Open 2021 will be played at the end of this month. There are 1000 points up for grabs there and the Russian is surely eyeing those.
