Former US Open champion  Juan Martin del Potro injured his knee at Queens’ Championships 2019 and then underwent surgery in Barcelona, Spain in the month of June. Until now the ‘Tower of Tandil’ Del Potro has not recovered completely, and he has announced an additional surgery to repair his knee. 

The surgery will take place in Miami, Florida. “Most doctors have come to the conclusion that a new intervention in the right knee of Juan Martin del Potro is necessary,” as revealed by Del Potro’s team.

“We hope that this is the definitive solution to eliminate the pain that not only has prevented Delpo from playing tennis but also making it difficult for him to perform daily activities.”

Consequently, Del Potro has pulled out of next month’s New York Open and Delray Beach Open 2020 in the US. 

He has been abstaining from activities such as jumping, running and climbing stairs. However, he was training to gain muscle and leg strength. Del Potro was hitting the gym and tennis courts, but his mobility was limited.

2019 withdrawals for Juan Martin Del Potro

The Argentine ace announced his return to tennis in October 2019. He was supposed to play at Intrum Stockholm Open in Sweden and the Erste Bank Open 500 in Austria. Due to the excruciating conditions of his knee, the Tandil native held up his return.

Also, he was scheduled to play an exhibition match against the Swiss legend, Roger Federer in Buenos Aires but he had to pull out at the end moment.

His knee issues have been bothering him since  Shanghai Masters 2018. He has still not recovered to his former state of fitness. Del Potro resumed his professional career at Delray Beach Open 2019 and played some epic matches during the clay-court tour.

After he slipped on the net at Queens’ Championships 2019 and then underwent surgery. For the moment, his return to the sport is simply undetermined.

The Argentine last won a title at Indian Wells 2018. He dethroned the reigning champion, Roger Federer in the finals and then lifted up the title. The same year he reached the finals US Open
