For the very first time in his career, World Number one Novak Djokovic lost to a lucky loser at an ATP event. The Serb suffered a 6-2, 6-1 loss to Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego at the quarterfinals of Vienna Open 2020. With this loss, Novak recorded his third defeat of the season, out of the 42 matches he played.

It was one of the heaviest losses of his career, as the 17-time Grand Slam just grabbed three games during his encounter in Austria. Also, the world’s best returner Djokovic could capitalize on just 53 percent of his return points.

Previously, before losing his match on Friday, Djokovic cemented his year-end World Number one spot by clinching a victory against Borna Coric in the pre-quarterfinals of Vienna.

And now, the Serbian legend isn’t really bothered with his one-sided loss to Sonego. Rather, he is contented to guarantee the year-end top-spot and simultaneously commence his preparations for ATP Finals 2020 in London.

“Yes, clinching the number one had an effect on me today. I’ve done what I came here for, securing the number one. And I move completely fine with today’s result. I’m healthy and looking forward to a strong finish in London,” Novak Djokovic said post his loss.

Along with the Grand Slam tally, Djokovic aims to surpass Roger Federer’s weeks at World Number one record. Presently, the Swiss maestro sits on the top with 310 weeks at the ATP ladder’s apex, and following him, Novak takes the second spot with 293 weeks.

Provided everything goes smoothly from the Serbian’s end, he will overtake Federer’s elite record of the number of weeks at the pinnacle by March 2021.
