French Open 2020 was witness to another history-making moment. In a match between Taylor Fritz and Lorenzo Sonego, the tie-breaker of the third set ended with the scoreline reading 19-17. It is the longest tie-breaker ever recorded at the Roland Garros. Although Fritz lost to Sonego 6-7, 3-6, 6-7 (17-19) in the third round of the French Open 2020, the American was extremely happy to become a part of history.

“I’m gonna be up all night thinking about what I could have done different, especially in that third set. Like on every single set point I made the return. I made like pretty good returns on almost all of them,” admitted the 22-year-old American in the post-match presentation.

The American admitted that he could have won the 36-point tie-breaker. This was also the joint second-longest tie-breaker in the history of Grand Slams.

The longest tie-breaker in a Grand Slam is a joint record which came at both the US Open 1993 and the Australian Open 2007. Both ended with the scoreline of 20-18. In the former, Goran Ivanisevic defeated Daniel Nestor. At the Australian Open 2007, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was able to manage a narrow escape against Andy Roddick.

Today’s record was the longest at the French Open. However, the match between John Isner and Jarkko Nieminen at the Wimbledon Championships 2014 also saw a similar scoreline in the tie-breaker of the fifth set. This was also the longest-tie breaker in the history of Wimbledon.

After making history, Lorenzo Sonego will face Diego Schwartzman in the fourth round of the French Open 2020. After defeating Rafael Nadal at the Italian Open 2020, the Argentine will be looking forward to leaving a mark at the French Open 2020.
