Second seed Daniil Medvedev faced 12th seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in the first semifinal of the men’s singles category of the US Open. While Medvedev reached the final four for the third time in a row, Auger-Aliassime made his maiden appearance in this stage of the US Open.

With a lively audience in the Arthur Ashe Stadium, Medvedev clinched a straight sets victory to reach his second US Open final in three years. The final scoreline read 6-4, 7-5, 6-2 with the match lasting two hours and four minutes.

Auger-Aliassime started the match by serving first, holding it to go 1-0 up. Medvedev followed it up by holding his own serve to tie the set at 1-1. The next four games then saw both players hold their serves to tie the set at 3-3.

However, the turning point came in the seventh game. Although Auger-Aliassime served well, the Russian made excellent shots to seal a crucial break and go 4-3 up. Despite the 21-year-old’s best efforts to break serve, the second seed clinched the set 6-4 in just under 40 minutes.

Just like in the first set, Auger-Aliassime served the first game in the second set. In the sixth game, the Canadian finally broke Medvedev’s serve to take a 4-2 lead. While it seemed Auger-Aliassime would win the set, the Russian saved two set points in the ninth game, breaking the Canadian’s serve to trail 4-5.

From that point on, there was no stopping Medvedev. The World No. 2 won the next three games on the trot, to clinch the second set 7-5.

By the time the third set started, the 21-year-old looked slightly tired. Although he held his serve to go 1-0 up, Medvedev held his serve to tie the set 1-1. The very next game saw the Russian break the Canadian’s serve yet again as he took a crucial 2-1 lead in the set.

Although Auger-Aliassime gave his best efforts, he couldn’t do anything to stop Medvedev’s charge. While the Canadian held serve in the seventh game, Medvedev held his in the next game to seal the set 6-2, and the match.

With this victory, the Russian is just one step away from clinching his maiden Grand Slam title. He will face either top seed Novak Djokovic or fourth seed Alexander Zverev on Sunday, September 12.
