While players in the competition were even in their late thirties now, two decades ago, it was unbelievable. Athletes used to start thinking about retirement as soon as they hit their thirties. But now, players have found ways to play at the top till they turn 40.
A 20-year-old Novak Djokovic defeated 26-year-old Roger Federer for the first time in 2077 at the Canadian Open. There was quite a lot of discussion surrounding the age of both players after the match. However, Djokovic, who is now 36, will face Carlos Alcaraz, who is 16 years younger than the Serb star, in the semifinal of the French Open. But the discussion of the age difference has vanished.

On their fifth meeting in the 2007 Canadian Open final, Roger Federer lost to Novak Djokovic. Federer, who was 26, received much sympathy from pundits, being much older than Djokovic. The age difference led many to conclude that the Serbian emerging triumphant was obvious. But now, there is a sixteen-year age gap between the Djoker and his next opponent, Carlos Alcaraz.
When 20-year-old Djokovic beat Federer, who had just turned 26, at the Canada Masters Final in 2007, there was a lot of talk about the age difference.
Here we are, with the older player 36, not 26. Age difference 16, not 6.
Yet nobody talks about age.
Funny, that. 🤔😉

As of now, there is little to no humdrum about the age difference between the two players. They will clash at the French Open semifinal and get a chance to lift the Musketeers trophy. Fans took notice of the fact and quickly chastised tennis pundits for overlooking the whopping age gap.
One user pointed out the simple change in the fact that players used to retire much earlier than they did today.
This is because back in 2007, a player being 26 was considered in the second half of his career, retirement by 30-32 at best. Now, that is not the case. Federer, Nadal, Djokovic have all played into their late 30s. Not everything is a slight to Djokovic.

Another fan agreed and said that younger retirement age led to more discussions about the matter.
Most players seemed to retire much younger then, so maybe they were saying Roger was near to being past it? !! Yes, it is strange, you are right.

One user pointed out that age was stated as a reason for Federer’s loss against Djokovic and Rafael Nadal many times.
Yes, Fed’s age was a thing all throughout his career and rivalry with Novak and Nadal.

A user jokingly blamed Federer for not discussing the age difference as he still won many tournaments in his 30s.
It is Fed's fault. He initiated this trend where we expect 35+ people to rule the roost and remain at the top regardless of how young opponents were.

An observant tennis fan noticed that players who are older generally get the excuse that the other player won because they were younger.
Despite an 11-month age gap, people claim that Novak's victories are attributed to his youth, while Nadal's triumphs are credited to his legendary status. Roger faces similar assessments. #Nolefam and Novak embrace these notions as we believe it aids his record-breaking endeavors

Another user pointed out a similar discussion between Nadal and Djokovic.
True! And Rafa and Novak are less than a year apart.

A user pointed out another instance of reporters obsessing over the age of players.
at age 19/20 every journalist kept asking rafa how long his carrier can last if he runs that much.

One fan reminded scrollers of the instance when a 29-year-old Federer’s age was a point in his losses to the Serbian.
remember in 2011 29yr fed was too old and thats why he started losing to djokovic
— aleksa (@akipop1) June 7, 2023
One user decided to start a war as they compared the quality of Federer to Djokovic’s now.
Maybe it's because the HUGE difference in player quality between that 26 y/o then & the 36 y/o today? 😉

Similarly, a user took it as a compliment for the Djoker.
That’s a big compliment to Djokovic coz he still plays like he’s 26

While many still argue about the age differences, Djokovic once stated that Federer is not limited due to his age. Although it may have been a debated topic a while back, age is not the reason for the players debilitating anymore.
