Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev went past Pedro Martinez Portero in the second round of the 2020 Australian Open on Thursday.

Coming into the match, Medvedev was always favourite to win against Martinez. Martinez’s first-round victory over Dominik Koepfer was his first win in a tour-level match and Medvedev, who played the most number of finals (9) in the ATP tour last year, played like a favourite.

With 19 aces to Pedro’s four, Medvedev registered a comfortable 7-5, 6-1, 6-3 win over his Spanish counterpart to cement his place in the third round of the year’s first Grand Slam. After Martinez’s initial fight that took the score to 5-5 in the first set, Medvedev went on an impressive seven-game winning streak.

However, the Russian had to be sidelined for a few minutes after his winning streak with an apparent nose bleed. The streak was then broken after Pedro won a game. But Medvedev eventually won the set 6-1 and the next set 6-3 to win the match in straight sets.

A funny reference came out when Daniil Medvedev was injured

When in the second set, Medveded was sitting out, Portugal journalist Jose Morgado framed a picture of each of the players where Martinez’s expression brought out a few smiles. “Pedro having some time to think about life,” he captioned the images as he posted them on Twitter.
