For all their domination during the Domestic Campaign, The DFB Super cup has been the one trophy Bayern Munich has never won. They have lost the last three in a row, including the 2015 edition when Nicklas Bendtner deflected a Robben Goal as the underdogs prevailed 5-4 on penalties. Five talking points from this match are:-
1. De Bruyne continues where he left last season
Kevin de Bruyne was a standout performer across Europe last season. He helped VfL Wolfsburg win the German Cup and finish second in the Bundesliga, finishing the season with career best of 16 goals and 28 assists in 51 appearances.

He started the DFL Super cup and provided the assist for Nicklas Bendtner just before the end. Throughout the match he was constantly creating chances and was the biggest menace Bayern Munich faced. When the time came for his turn in the shootout, like all the other Wolfsburg players, he slotted it in. That kick gave Wolfsburg the lead as Xabi Alonso had just missed the previous kick. His stock was at its highest last term and no doubt it will continue to rise if he maintains last season’s form. Currently, he will.
2. The two big summer signings of Bayern
Douglas Costa was signed for €30 million fee from FC Shakhtar Donetsk. The 24-year-old has made a bright star for Bayern, providing the cross that allowed Bayern to open the scoring. He was able to slot his penalty kick in the shootout but it was too late by then. Despite making some reckless tackles and collecting a yellow, he had a good game and will prove to be an asset as the season unfolds.
Arturo Vidal was the other mega summer signing costing Munich €37 million. Having had successful spells with Juventus and Bayer Leverkusen, he has the experience for German football. However, he is reckless in his tackling and is very lucky to stay on in big matches. He picked up a booking five minutes into his debut. Unless he tries to control his temper, it could prove costly in big matches, as he is one of the finest offensive midfielders right now.
3. Wolfsburg could make a genuine title challenge
The last three German leagues have been won by Bayern Munich, each in a convincing manner. Last season, Borussia Dortmund were not even the usual runners up and were replaced by Wolfsburg led by Kevin de Bruyne and Bas Dost. Last season, they handed Bayern a 4-0 thrashing.
The first encounter between them saw Wolfsburg match Munich throughout the match before winning it on penalties. The bridge between Bayern and the second best team may not be as wide as it was in the last few seasons. Wolfsburg could spring a surprise and win the Bundesliga for the first time since 2009.
4. Bayern Munich need to work on penalty shootouts
The last two penalty shootouts they have been involved in, it’s resulted in two defeats. The 2014/15 DFB Pokal semi-finals against Dortmund saw Munich fail to score in the shootout, and again Xabi Alonso failed to score against Wolfsburg in the 2015 DFB Super cup, which allowed Wolfsburg to prevail 5-4 on penalties.
Whether they are able to hold their nerves while taking the kick or Manuel Neuer is ineffective at stopping them? Bayern need to address this issue as soon as possible. They cannot afford to be humbled on penalties in Europe should it come to that.
5. Bendtner might have the confidence again

Nicklas Bendtner has primarily been a bench player at Wolfsburg since he moved prior to the 2014/15 season. He has played second fiddle to Bas Dost. His 29 appearances for the German outfit till date, have produced six goals, all from the bench. This includes his equalizer in the DFB super cup.
When it came to the penalty shootout, he slotted the final kick, that sealed the win for Wolfsburg. This should come as a confidence booster for him, as he would look to try and play more regularly. He is 27 years old and should have the best years ahead.
