The 2020 Formula season will see drivers able to make as many changes as they want to their helmets during the season. Earlier they were only permitted one change per season. Drivers like Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel were critical of this rule. Hamilton expressed his displeasure over just one helmet design change per season. He termed it as, “BS.” Despite the rule, Hamilton has used 4 different designs in a single year last season. They were his regular helmet, the Niki Lauda tribute helmet worn in Monaco, The Senna tribute helmet in Brazil and the gold helmet at Abu Dhabi. In his thirteen-year F1 career Hamilton has used multiple helmets. We decided to list out his top 5 designs.

1. Brazil GP 2019

Lewis Hamilton wrapped up his 6th Drivers Championship with 2 races to go. At the penultimate race of the season in Interlagos, Hamilton released a new helmet design as a tribute to his idol Ayrton Senna. He did this to please Brazilian fans who miss Senna and have no home driver on the current F1 grid. The helmet features a Brazil flag on the top, the Christ the Redeemer statue on the back. This is on a background of Senna’s yellow and green colors. The visor is bordered with 6 stars, one each for Hamilton’s 6 title wins.

2. Formula 1 2017 Season

In the year 2017, Lewis Hamilton was a man on a mission. He reeled off 4 straight wins to close of 2016 but came up short against his teammate Nico Rosberg in the Drivers standings. The Briton reeled off 11 wins in the season to clinch his 4th World Title. The then 3 times World Champion ran a competition to have his helmet designed by a fan. This saw over 8,000 entries which must’ve left Hamilton spoilt for choice.

Hamilton decided to race with Brazilian Rai Caldato’s design. It was a yellow helmet featuring the color of the Brazilian flag to honor the late great Ayrton Senna. The helmet also featured 3 stars which represented Hamilton’s title wins in 2008, 2014 and 2015.

“The candy apple red balances with the yellow very well. Rai, I look forward to meeting you in person to present you with your prize! Thank you all for entering this competition, I’m taken back by your creativity,” wrote Hamilton in the post where he revealed the winning design.

3. Abu Dhabi GP 2018

Lewis Hamilton secured his 5th Drivers title and returned to Formula 1’s only day/night race with a gold helmet. This was to be the norm with him doing it in 2017 as well as 2019. His 2018 helmet featured 5 stars for the 5 Drivers Championships he had won. There was a cloud with a smiley face on the visor, which must have signified the offseason. The back of the helmet had the word “HAM” beneath which was an animation of him. This figure was flanked by the laurel wreath. A clear indicator that this was a celebratory helmet. It looked amazing too, which is why it makes this list.

4. Formula 1 2020 Season

Hamilton’s helmet for the upcoming season is called Purple Dove. The Mercedes driver took to Twitter to reveal his helmet.

The design retains elements of Brazil on the back. It also features the Tupac song lyric, “Still I Rise.” This has been a constant feature of Lewis Hamilton helmets over the years. He has a tattoo with the moniker on his back as well.

On either side of the visor are 6 stars signifying each of Hamilton’s Driver’s Championships. This is the first time Hamilton has introduced the color purple to his helmet with the same areas being first yellow, then white and red in recent years.

Hamilton had a quiet race coming home in 5th, however, he attracted a lot of attention amongst eagle-eyed fans who spotted his new design.
