Born in June 1992 in Sanya, Hainan Province, China, Yan started practicing Taekwondo at a very young age and didn't stop until she reached college. Originally an accounting student, she chose the path of the gladiators after joining MMA school Sanda League following her graduation.

She quickly rose through Chinese regional circuits and would eventually make her pro debut against Kunlun Fight 10 years ago in 2014. During her time at the promotion, she would win two titles including the bantamweight gold, and then go on to secure 5 more wins within a short span of 3 years, which would get her noticed by UFC scouts.
