Co-main event of UFC 307 - Raquel Pennington vs. Julianna Peña
After UFC Noche saw the men's bantamweight title change hands, Raquel Pennington will defend her belt against Julianna Peña for the October event. What makes this bout interesting is that Peña who once held the title, had clinched it from Amanda Nunes, but lost it during a rematch. And later when Nunes vacated it following her retirement, Pennington claimed it in a thrilling matchup against Mayra Bueno Silva at UFC 297.
Although Pennington is on a six-fight winning streak, this would be her first title defense. Peña on the other hand, has not stepped into the octagon since July 2022, after she lost the title, and has 2 and won 2 out of her last 4 bouts. An added motivation for Pennington might also be sharing the card with her wife, Tecia Pennington, who would face off against Carla Esparza in the prelims.
Main event of UFC 307 - Alex Pereira vs Khalil Rountree Jr.
As many fans have cited, "Pereira's back must be hurting from carrying the ufc," the champ will defend his title for a third time after he demolished not just one but two UFC ex-champs- Jamahal Hill and Jiri Prochazka. As for the contender Khalil Rountree Jr., he has been on his own dominant streak, with 4 KO wins out of his 5-win streak. Yet, contrary to Poatan, Rountree has been out of action for almost a year now, and his suspension played a primary role in the same.
Adding an interesting layer to the ordeal, 'The War Horse,' was slated to fight Jamahal Hill at UFC 303 after his UFC 300 defeat. However, Rountree tested positive for a banned substance, which he clarified to have consumed unknowingly in the form of supplements he ingested while preparing for the fight. If we are talking technically, Rountree was under suspension till August 2024, after the Nevada Athletic Commission extended it after testing positive for a-androstanediol, 5b-androstanediol, and androsterone, metabolites of DHEA — an anabolic steroid.
But with Dana White's confirmation, it seems likely that by October, the fighter seems to have reached an agreement with the commission. And Periera is not to back out, his broken toe during UFC 300 standing as a testament to that.
