The two-time UFC heavyweight champion was born on August 19, 1982 in Independence, Ohio, USA. He was born and raised in Euclid Ohio and his parents are Croatian. His parents divorced when he was a toddler and his mother Kathy raised him while his father Bojan moved to Austria. “I was a mama’s boy. She’s awesome, a great lady” - he told UFC.com. In fact, he had not seen their homeland until 2015, when he went there to train with Croatian UFC legend Mirko Cro Cop.
In 2019, after he reclaimed the heavyweight title from Daniel Cormier, Miocic revealed his father had beaten cancer. “I’m so happy for you, dad. I got this belt, this is for you OK... My dad just got cleared of cancer, by the way, today. How awesome is that, right? He acted like it was no big thing. He’s like, ‘Oh I’m clear’.”

As an amateur, Stipe Miocic amassed a 5-0 record before turning pro in 2010. He went 6-0 fighting in the North American Allied Fight Series(5) and the South Korean promotion Moosin(1). On October 8, 2011, he made his UFC debut against Joey Beltran. He went 3-0 in the UFC before his maiden loss against Stefan Struve in September 2012.
