The darkest days of her life:

Shi Jones, who had her sights set on the Tokyo Olympics, had a turbulent 2020 and 2021. The games were postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, so she had to wait an extra year in 2020. Then, before the trials could begin, she was involved in a terrible car accident. This resulted in her fracturing her back and foot, delaying her preparation for the games and necessitating a four-month recovery period. Despite this, she gave the trials her all and finished 10th overall. However, only the top nine gymnasts were chosen to compete in Tokyo, which was heartbreaking for Jones, who was just a spot away.

Then, five months later, she faced one of her darkest days. In December 2021, tragedy struck and changed her life forever. Shilese Jones's father, Sylvester Jones, passed away after a long and hard battle with kidney disease. Her dad had always been a source of strength and inspiration for Shi Jones. His dream was to see his daughter on the Olympic stage, always encouraging and motivating her throughout her life.

Distraught following her father's passing, Shi Jones faced uncertainty about her future in gymnastics. However, she knew how much the Olympic dream meant to her father and to herself. She knew her father was very loved by her fans and that he would want the best for her. She also stated that she still had a lot left to prove. So, with a newfound passion and the support of her fans, she decided to continue her journey and set her sights on the Paris Olympics in 2024.

In January 2022, Shi Jones returned to Ascend Gymnastics in Auburn, where her gymnastics journey had first started. She began working with new coaches, Sarah Korngold and Brett Wargo, with renewed and newfound determination.

In a post on Instagram following her silver medal win at the 2023 Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championships, she wrote, "My dad is my guardian angel".
