Who is Ryan Bourland?
Ryan Bourland is a semi-retired former Golden Gloves champion, National Junior Olympian, and two-time GBO Light Heavyweight champion. At the age of 25, he transitioned to professional boxing. “The Rhino” has since compiled a record of 17-2 with six knockouts, capturing the regional light heavyweight GBO title along the way. Having last fought in 2022 against Santario Martin, the North Dakota-based fighter remains in the shadows of the cruiserweight class. Despite showing promise, Ryan Bourland retired from boxing in 2018 to move to North Dakota to work on oil rigs. He made a brief comeback to the ring in 2022 and then returned to North Dakota until the call from Jake Paul's Most Valuable Promotions.
Ryan Bourland’s Early Life
Born on June 17, 1988, Ryan Bourland grew up in Vallejo, California, in a white, working-class neighborhood. He lived in a family of five, with his two other siblings. The fighter spent his formative years surrounded by a diverse neighborhood, with his elementary middle schools being heavily charged with racial politics. In an interview, he once noted, “The white kids and the Black kids fought all the time over nothing.”
As a young boy, he was a lovable bully who would fight the kids who picked on other kids. He once said, "I don’t like to see people who are vulnerable being made fun of ”“ it really gets to me." As a result, he was constantly embroiled in fights with other children.
The young Bourland also had an anger problem. He was then enlisted in a youth boxing program where he learned how to box. Things started getting better as he took to the program. However, the problem worsened when his parents divorced. “The divorce got me all torn up,” he said. He started getting into more fights.
Bourland then started getting into trouble with the law. “I did a lot of stupid stuff,” he noted. Having been in juvenile hall fifteen times before it, the young Bourland was locked up in the California Youth Authority from age seventeen to eighteen. The details of these offenses are unknown, but once he was released from the center, he was arrested yet again. Twice, actually for DUIs, and the court sent him to a rehabilitation program for alcoholism.
During that program, a counselor suggested he begin training at a nearby boxing gym, relieving him early in the evenings to facilitate the process. Boxing helped him phase out the unfavorable company he spent his days with. “I had gained a lot of weight ”“ I was about 250 pounds”¦at the gym, I started losing weight, getting strong, and taking control of my life,” he recalled. Bourland started seeing the results of his work in the way his body began to look and he liked the changes.
