Roger Federer was born on August 8, 1981, in Basel, Switzerland. His Afrikaner mother, Lynette Federer (now Durand), is from Kempton Park, Gauteng, in South Africa, and his Swiss-German father, Robert Federer, is from Berneck, St. Gallen. His older sister Diana is his only sibling. He was raised in the border towns of Birsfelden, Riehen, and Munchenstein and is proficient in Swiss German, Standard German, English, and French. He also has a working knowledge of Italian and Swedish. His mother tongue is Swiss German.
He supported the soccer club FC Basel and the Swiss national team while growing up. He also attributes his hand-eye coordination to the varied sports he participated in as a kid, such as basketball and badminton.

Roger Federer met Miroslava Vavrincova, referred to as Mirka, a former Women's Tennis Association player when they were both representing Switzerland in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. On April 11, 2009, they tied the knot at the Wenkenhof Villa in Riehen, close to Basel, in the presence of a select number of dear friends and family. The Mighty Federer played his first ATP tournament in 1998 in Switzerland. He entered the top 100 in 1999. Federer's first ATP tour win came in 2001 when he won the Milan Indoor Tournament against Julien Boutter. He also reached the quarterfinal of the French Open that year and made his way into the top 15. In 2002, Federer won his first Masters, The Hamburg Masters, which was played on clay. Roger Federer stopped being sponsored by Nike in 2019. Uniqlo approached the former number 1 to sponsor him for clothes. However, he still wore Nike shoes without being sponsored. Eventually, Federer discovered the Swiss shoe company, On. He first found out about the company when he saw his wife wearing them. Later, Federer would see people on the streets of Switzerland donning shoes made by On.
He eventually wore the shoes in training and loved them. Federer approached the board of directors of On and signed a deal with them which included a 3% stake in the company. With Federer on board, On was launched into the mainstream. The company reported immense growth in 2021.
Owing to their newfound popularity, the Swiss shoe company was able to sign WTA number 1 Iga Swiatek and the up-and-coming American Ben Shelton. With such deals, On plans to target a younger audience.

Roger Federer was suffering from an injury on his right knee and he underwent surgery for the same in February 2020. He then underwent another knee surgery in June and ended his 2020 season.
Federer's desire to return to the Tour with the Australian Open in 2021 had to, unfortunately, be pushed aside as he didn't have enough time for recovery. The Swiss star made a comeback at the 2021 French Open, followed by a quarter-final run at the Wimbledon Championships.
