Lawler made his UFC debut on May 10, 2002, and defeated Aaron Riley via unanimous decision at UFC 37. Subsequently, he claimed two consecutive victories before suffering his first-ever professional loss against Pete Spratt because of a hip injury. 'Ruthless' then made a great comeback by claiming a unanimous decision victory over Chris Lytle and was on his way to fight Nick Diaz.

'Ruthless' fought against Nick Diaz on April 2, 2004, at UFC 47, where he suffered a second-round KO loss. Lawler has fought several elite fighters, such as Josh Koscheck, Colby Covington, Carlos Condit, Donald Cerrone, and more in his UFC career.

In his first fight against Rory MacDonald at UFC 167, Lawler claimed a magnificent split decision victory. Then the pair clashed in a rematch in what would become one of the best title fights in UFC history. Lawler vs. MacDonald 2 took place at UFC 189, where the pair left everything they had inside the octagon. After four rounds of a long-drawn battle, 'Ruthless' emerged victorious via TKO in the fifth round.

'Ruthless' became the UFC welterweight champion by defeating Johny Hendricks via split decision at UFC 181. Lawler then successfully defended his UFC welterweight title two times before losing it to Tyron Woodley at UFC 201.

His last fight was against Neil Magny at UFC Fight Night: Smith vs. Rakic, where he suffered his fourth consecutive loss. Now, he will step inside the octagon in a rematch of 17 years in making against Nick Diaz at UFC 266 on September 25, 2021.

'Ruthless' has a combined UFC, Strikeforce, Elite XC, and Pride record of 19-14-0 (1NC).
