Reed represented Augusta State University and the University of Georgia during his college golf days. He assisted Augusta State in winning back-to-back NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships in 2010 and 2011. Reed began playing professionally in 2011 and has since competed on the PGA Tour, European Tour, and Web.com Tour before obtaining a 2013 PGA Tour card. However, in 2022, Patrick Reed along with several other players joined the newly made LIV Golf and was suspended from the PGA Tour.

Reed is now part of the 4 Aces GC, who won the inaugural season of LIV Golf. Despite the jump, Reed is still considered one of the best talents of this generation. With 12 professional wins to his name including the 2018 Masters Tournament, the American golfer’s most notable performance came at the 2014 Ryder Cup against Rory McIlroy where he was given the nickname ‘Captain America’ by the fans. Apart from his triumphs in the sport, Reed is also considered one of the most controversial golfers of this generation. With several cheating allegations surrounding the golfer, he is constantly mocked for his controversial past.

Patrick Reed’s Family

Reed first met his future wife Justine Karain Reed back when he was a freshman at the University of Georgia. He first went on a date with Justine’s younger sister Kris but reached out to Justine on Facebook, since Kris didn’t respond to him after their date. However, the couple only began dating years later. In December 2012, Patrick and Justine tied the knot. His wife has been by the side of the golfer throughout his professional career. Moreover, she even caddied for Patrick during his early professional days.

In 2014, Justine gave birth to the couple’s first child, Windsor Wells Reed. Since then, Justine stopped caddying for her hubby and instead appointed her brother, Kessler Karain as Reed’s new caddie. Nonetheless, three years later, the couple welcomed a baby boy. Though Patrick Reed shares a great bond with his children, he doesn’t share the same relationship with his parents.

Since his marriage to Justine, Reed hasn’t been in contact with his parents Bill and Jeanette Reed as well as his sister, Hannah. Both of his parents weren't invited to his marriage in 2012. Neither were they on sight during Patrick Reed’s first Major win at the 2018 Masters. Moreover, Bill and Jeanette Reed were escorted out of the Pinehurst Resort while their son was competing at the 2014 US Open.

According to Reed’s wife, the golfer was emotionally and physically abused by his parents during his childhood. Despite all the drama and controversy surrounding the family, his mother Jeanette Reed continues showing support to his son through Twitter and Facebook. Moreover, she also seems to be proud of him.

He has won the World Golf Championship twice. Reed’s first Major victory came at the 2018 Masters with a stunning 15 under-par score. To this day, it remains his only Major win. His last victory came at the 2021 Farmers Insurance Open. However, he is yet to add an individual win to his name at LIV Golf, though having won four times with his team 4 Aces GC.

While his individual resume may be impressive, Patrick Reed’s team appearances have also been worthy of appreciation. He also won the Presidents Cup with Team USA in 2016, 2017, and 2019. Moreover, Reed has represented the American Team in 2014, 2016 (winners), and 2018 editions of the Ryder Cup. Though Reed’s signing bonus with LIV Golf is publicly undisclosed, he has reportedly signed a multi-million dollar deal. Moreover, Patrick Reed has already earned $14,722,714 on the course while competing for LIV Golf. He also has endorsement deals with Nike, Titleist, Rolex, Mercedes-Benz, and others.

Patrick Reed’s Controversy

Though Reed has been one of the best golfers on the professional circuit, his talents have been overshadowed by numerous controversies. The golfer was suspended from competing on the PGA Tour following his decision to join LIV Golf. He was even denied an entry to compete at the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play in March 2023.

In 2022, Patrick Reed filed a defamation lawsuit against Golf Channel’s Brandel Chamblee for a reported $750 million fee. The golfer accused the journalist of destroying his reputation creating hate and a hostile work environment for him and also discrediting his name. However, the 120 allegations against Golf Channel were dismissed by a federal judge in Florida. Apart from his court cases, Reed also has several controversies on the golf course.

During his college days at the University of Georgia, Patrick Reed was accused of cheating and stealing from his teammates. Many claim it was the ‘stealing’ reason that got Reed dismissed from the University, though the golfer claims he was dismissed due to alcohol violations. Apart from his locker room allegations, Reed was arrested for underage drinking and possessing a fake ID during his time in Georgia. He pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor and was put on probation, fined, and sentenced to 60 hours of community service.

The allegations have continued following Reed even in his professional career. In the 2019 Hero World Challenge tournament, Reed was caught on camera shifting his ball out of the sand of the bunker by swinging twice at the 11th hole. The video immediately went viral and Reed was penalized by the PGA Tour, drawing immense heat from the fans.

Though Patrick Reed’s golf ball wasn't stuck in the sand during the 2021 Farmers Insurance Open, the golfer was accused of another allegation related to the rulings. On the 10th hole at Torrey Pines, Reed's second shot went around the rough. He claimed the ball was embedded in the rough which is why he chose to pick it by his hand. Similar to his 2019 Hero World Challenge incident, the golf community wasn't pleased with Reed’s actions.

Reed once again angered the golf social media space during the European Tour’s 2023 Dubai Desert Classic. According to him, his tee shot at the 17th hole at the Emirates Golf Club got stuck in a tree which allowed him to take a drop. However, golf fans immediately scrutinized the golfer for lying as many claimed the ball must have dropped around the trees.

Patrick Reed’s Charity and Foundation

Like most golfers, Reed also doesn't hesitate in helping back society. Team Reed Foundation, a non-profit organization, was founded by the golfer dedicated to helping local and national communities. The Foundation helps homeless people, provides youth golf programs, and also supports American Soldiers and Veterans programs.

Since early 2019, Team Reed Foundation has partnered with Texas PGA Foundation to create the Patrick Reed Scholarship. It is aimed at a graduating senior who exemplifies what it means to be a student-athlete through a commitment to academics, athletics, and community involvement. The student will receive $10,000 from the golfer’s foundation which is to be used towards their college education.
