New York Jets 2023 - Latest News, Schedule, Roster, Rumors, Injury Updates & More

The New York Jets are an American Football team based in New York Metropolitan. They are one of the two professional Football teams based in the New York City area, New York Giants being the other. The Jets compete in the National Football League (NFL) as part of the AFC East.

About the New York Jets

The New York Jets was founded as the Titans of New York in 1959 as part of the AFL. The team changed hands in 1963 when they were on the verge of Bankruptcy, and new owner Sonny Werblin renamed the franchise New York Jets. The Jets historically have also been called the 'Gang Green' for their green-white jersey.

They have been to the Super Bowl on only one occasion having won it, in 1969. In their history, they have made it to the playoffs a total of 14 times but failed to seal another Super Bowl spot. They appeared in the NFL playoffs 2 times in the 1960s, 4 times in the 1980s, 2 times in the 1990s, and 6 times in the 2000s; in their most successful decade ever. In the last decade, the Jets did not qualify for the playoffs for once.

The Jets form the AFC East division, along with the Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, and the New England Patriots. Robert Saleh is the head coach of the Jets, having joined the team in 2021. They boast a 12-26-0 record during his tenure. Since his joining, the Jets have finished at the bottom of the AFC East 2/2 times. Weeb Ewbank remains the most successful coach in their history, with a 71-77-6 record and the franchise's only Super Bowl to his name.

American businessman Woody Johnson is the Jet's current owner having bought the franchise back in 2000. He acts as the CEO and chairman of the managing board, and Hymie Elhai serves as the president. Johnson is a fourth-generation family member of the pharmaceutical giant Johnson and Johnson founders. Along with his brother Christopher, he spent $635 million to purchase the franchise.

The Jets are the sixth richest NFL franchise as of 2023, with a market value of $6.1 billion. They had the second-highest game-attendee average in the NFL 2022 at 78,009, trailed only by the Dallas Cowboys. The Jets have an Instagram following of 1 million and an X (Twitter) following of 1.3 million. In the past couple of years, the franchise has seen a rapid surge of fan following, and they are among the NFL's fastest-growing fanbases.

2023 schedule

The Jets have a 3-3 record in the season after match week 6 and are currently on a bye week. Quarterback Zach Wilson has taken charge of the offense in Aaron Rodgers' absence. Or more like, under his supervision. That's because Rodgers was seen without his support in the warm-up before the Eagles game, and even threw a few passes. His talks to the players might have been influential as the Jets handed the Philadelphia Eagles their first defeat of the season. The Jets next face the city neighbor New York Giants on October 29.

2023 Key Players

Zach Wilson - Quarterback

The 2nd overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, the Jets got their hand on Zach Wilson with a four-year, $35.15 million deal. He has been the Jets' offensive commander in charge following Sam Darnold's departure in 2021 and was the 2nd best rookie QB of the season in PFF rerankings. After Aaron Rodgers' injury in the 2023 season opener, Wilson has taken up the role of QB1. Somewhat criticized for average performances in the first 3 games, Wilson finally switched gears against the Chiefs, almost creating the upset of the season.

Garrett Wilson - Quarterback

A first-round draft of the NFL 2022, Garrett Wilson signed a four-year, $20.55 million deal with the Jets. Garrett proved to be the ideal follow-up for his namesake Zach, having named the Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2022. That was not a fluke as the young QB managed 83 receptions and 1103 passing yards despite coming off the bench multiple times. A physical specimen on his own, Wilson brings a dependable partnership in offense along with Zach.

Sauce Gardner - Cornerback

Gardner was a fourth overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft by the Jets and signed an impressive four-year $38.7 million deal with the franchise. Known for his physical plays that demand respect, the young cornerback became the first rookie CB in 41 years to earn an All-Pro entry. Gardner also won the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award in 2022, completing the holy trinity of Jets rookies. He managed 51 tackles and only allowed 126 yards in his first season, contradicting his comparatively smaller stature.

Practice and Match Ground

Practice Ground - Florham Park

The team's clubhouse is located at Florham Park, New Jersey. The Jets have a 27-acre training and health facility in the area, which they have been using since 2008. Although on paper the Jets are based in New York, all of the club operations take place in Florham Park, NJ. The club facility is situated 36 miles West of New York City.

Match Ground - MetLife Stadium

They play their home games at MetLife Stadium, located in East Rutherford, New Jersey, some 40 minutes drive from Florham Park. The Jets share the stadium with fellow NFL franchise New York Giants. The stadium is the biggest in the NFL with a seating capacity of 82,500 and cost $1.6 billion to build. The construction work started in the September of 2007 and took 2.5 years to complete. MetLife opened to the public on April 10, 2010.

Mascot

The Jets are one of only four teams who do not have an official Mascot. However, there was one time when the netizens demanded the franchise announce a 1970s club legend Joe Namath doll as their official Mascot, rather jokingly.

New York Jets Hall of Fame

Founded in 1963 in Canton, Ohio, the Pro Football Hall of Fame serves as a prestigious institution that pays tribute to the key figures who have left an indelible mark on the history of professional football. Annually, a new class of enshrines is inducted into the Hall of Fame, featuring the sport's most iconic athletes, coaches, and contributors. In their eventful history, the Jets have come across 20 such entities who have changed their course of timeline forever and reflected their golden moments from the glistering past. The Jet's legendary Super Bowl-winning coach Weeb Ewbank and MVP Joe Namath sit atop the list like two jewels in the crown.

FAQs

1. Why are the New York Jets called 'Jets'?

When the team was sold in 1963, businessman Sonny Werblin named the team 'Jets'. Jets used to play games next to LaGuardia Airport, which regularly saw heavy jet aircraft traffic, hence originating their name. Another reason was that the team played their home games in Shea Stadium, which was the existing home ground for the MLB side New York Mets.

2. Who is the biggest fan of the Jets?

Edwin M. Anzalone, also known as the Fireman Ed, is the most hardcore Jets fan out there. He has been to every stadium for 27 years where the Jets' have played their home games, including the Shea Stadium, former Giants Stadium, and their current MetLife Stadium.

3. Who is the Greatest Jets player of all time?

Wide Receiver Don Maynard is often regarded as the greatest Jets player of all time. Most of the long-time fans of the franchise come to that conclusion.
