After two fights, 'El Azteca' beat Batyr Akhmedov for the then-vacant WBA (Regular) super lightweight title via unanimous decision in 2019. In October 2020, he made his first successful title defense against Ryan Karl, winning via TKO in the sixth round.

Then, 'El Azteca' found himself in one of the toughest fights of his career, Mario Barrios vs. Gervonta Davis. His fight against 'Tank' Davis took place on June 26, 2021, at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S. 

Barrios suffered the first-ever loss of his professional career as Davis dethroned him to claim the WBA (Regular) super lightweight title via TKO in the eleventh round.
