LIV Golf Miami 2023: History, Format, and Composition

LIV Golf is a new league in the golf world, backed by Yasir Al-Rumayyan. This league was inaugurated last year and is popular for its atypical game format and team elements. The LIV Golf Miami is the final team championship in the LIV schedule. This event was introduced last year; hence, 2023 LIV Golf Miami will be the second edition of it. "We’re thrilled to return to the Blue Monster at Doral to celebrate a historic year and crown the 2023 LIV Golf League team champion," said LIV CEO Greg Norman.

Like other LIV tournaments, Team Championship Miami will also be a three-day strong play, and the final dates are already out. The event will start on October 20 and continue until October 22. The location of the venue remains unchanged from 2022. It is going to take place at the Trump National Doral in Miami, USA.

Introduction to the LIV Golf Miami

• Origin and Naming

LIV Golf Miami is the ultimate team championship event. Besides, the entire Greg Norman squad of 48 players will be participating in the event. As far as the name of the event is concerned, it shares some familiarity with other LIV events. The venue of the event is mentioned in the name. In this case, since it's taking place in Miami, USA, the name is LIV Golf Miami.

• Historical winners

Last year, the final Team Championship in Miami called its curtain on Sunday, October 30. With that, Dustin Johnson's 4Aces, the number one seed, triumphed at the event and secured the LIV Golf Team Championship title.

The Miami event is entirely devoted to team participation, and last year Punch GC, Smash GC, Stinger GC, and 4Aces GC were the final four teams of the competition. Last year, the prize pool for the team championship was quite hefty. The entire purse was $50 million, out of which all the teams bagged their portions of prize shares. The winner, 4 Aces GC, got $16 million, which was shared amongst the four members. Punch GC, the runner-up, received $8 million under the leadership of Cameron Smith.

LIV Golf Miami 2023 format

Other than the PGA Tour, LIV Golf follows its own rule to start off a match with a shotgun. Also, in LIV Golf Miami, the beginning process will remain the same. Now, let's look at the breakdown of how the match will proceed day by day:

The Quarterfinals: Friday

• Teams seeded 1-4 will get a bye.


• Teams ranked 5–12 will match against each other in both singles matches and one foursome.


• The top-ranked team can pick its competitor.


• The 32 players from eight teams will compete simultaneously as the shotgun fires.


• Matches continue until there's a winner, and there's no system for ties. A winner in each match will receive a point.


• Teams achieving two points will go to Saturday's semifinals.

The Semi-Finals: Saturday

• Teams ranked 1-4 join the four Friday-winning teams for head-to-head team match play.


• Again, the best teams choose their enemy teams.


• As a repetition of Friday, all 32 players will contest simultaneously as shotgun fires.


• Teams follow the Friday format: two singles and one foursome. And in each match, the victor will get a point.


• In the end, the team championship will consist of the four teams that earned two points.

The Championship: Sunday

• The four winning teams will compete in stroke play as the shotgun fires.


• All sixteen players will play in twosomes, and team captains will play together.


• All four scores will be considered the team score.


• At the end of day three, the team with the lowest score will be declared the champion squad.

Last year, the coverage was done by SS Variety 1, and the match was televised at 6 p.m. This year, the details of that are yet to be known.

2023 LIV Golf Miami course details

The golf resort, Trump National Doral Miami, is situated in South Florida. The history of the course and its naming have a very interesting story. In 1962, Alfred Kaskel, a businessman, founded the place. It was named 'Doral' following his name Kaskel and his wife's name Doris. It has a 72-hole layout, and the LIV Team Championship takes place at their signature Blue Monster course at Doral.

The course was designed by Dick Wilson, and its length stretched for 7,510 yards. Besides the Blue Monster, there are other three courses at Miami: Golden Palm (6,609 yards), Red Tiger (6,101 yards), and Silver Fox (6,557 yards).

Over the years, the Blue Monster has even gone on to host many significant events in the sport. Aside from the LIV Team Championship, the Blue Monster hosted the Doral Open, a PGA Tour event, from 1962 to 2006. Another professional golf tournament, the WGC-Cadillac Championship, was also played there for a period of time from 2007–2016 after having played in other venues. The resort's other courses also hosted different events, like Golden Palm, which served as the venue of the PGA Tour's Qualifying Tournament in 1999. Also, Red Tiger was the layout where LPGA Tour's The Office Depot was played.
