Lee Westwood 2023: Net worth, salary and endorsements
Lee John Westwood OBE is an English professional golfer. After playing multiple sports like rugby, cricket, and soccer in school, Westwood made golf his focus at the age of 13 when he started practicing with a half set that his grandparents gifted him.
Although he was a late bloomer, Westwood started excelling early. From multiple Ryder Cup wins to reaching World No. 1, Westwood is one of the most prolific golfers of his time. Let's dive in to learn more!
Early life and family
Lee John Westwood was born on 24 April 1973 to parents John and Trish in Worksop, Nottinghamshire, England. His father is a mathematics teacher by profession and is responsible for encouraging Lee to take up the sport. He also has a sister named Yolanda.
Westwood is currently married to Helen Storey, who is a fitness instructor and also his caddie. They tied the knot in June 2021 after being together for over five years. He also has a son and a daughter from his previous marriage to Laurae Coltart. His son has also caddied for him in multiple events.
Amateur career
Despite being a late entrant than most, Westwood went on to register wins early on in his amateur career. Less than two years after beginning to play, he became the junior champion of Nottinghamshire. In August 1989, he represented England in the Boys Home International. In 1990 and 1991, he was also part of the Great Britain and Ireland Boys squad for the Jacques Léglise Trophy.
His first-ever amateur win came at the Peter McAvoy Trophy in 1991. He eventually turned professional after claiming the British Youths Amateur Championship in 1993.
Professional career
His first win as a professional came in the 1996 Volvo Scandinavian Masters, which was followed by another victory at the Sumitomo VISA Taiheiyo Masters in Japan. Westwood saw more success in 1997 as he not only defended the Japanese title but also won the Malaysian Open, the Volvo Masters in Spain, and the Holden Australian Open.
In his first 29 years as a pro, the golfer registered at least one win in 15 of them. His most wins in a single year is seven, a feat he accomplished in both 1998 and 2000. Westwood is also among the few players who have recorded wins across five different continents: Europe, North America, Asia, Africa, and Australia.
When he became the world number one in October 2010, Westwood became the first English golfer to do so since Faldo. He is also one of the few golfers to have held the number-one ranking despite not having a single major win. Westwood's 25 career wins on the DP World Tour puts him eighth on the all-time list.
In 2012, the golfer was appointed OBE (Order of the British Empire) by Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace for his services to golf.
Ryder Cup achievements
In his long and illustrious career, Lee Westwood has witnessed much success in the Ryder Cup. Since his debut appearance in 1997, he has played for Europe in the biennial tournament 11 times and has also appeared in a record 47 Ryder Cup matches.
His 24 (21-20-6) record ties for the third-most for any Team Europe player behind Sergio Garcia (28.5) and Nick Faldo (25). No other European player has been on more winning Ryder Cup squads than Westwood's seven (1997, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2012, and 2014).
Move to LIV Golf
In 2022, Lee Westwood surprised many with his move to the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF)-backed LIV Golf. Per various sources, LIV signed the golfer for $20-$30 million. After joining LIV, he made an impressive appearance at LIV's Boston event by shooting a final-round 62. He is also the co-captain of the Majesticks GC, the all-European team out of the 12 LIV teams.
