Who is Kelvin Gastelum?

Kelvin Gastelum is a UFC star who fights in the UFC's middleweight and welterweight divisions. Gastelum was born on October 24, 1991, in San Jose, in the Silicon Valley of California to Mexican immigrant parents. His parents hail from Obregon, in the state of Sonora, Mexico, where the UFC star temporarily lived as a child.

Gastelum's father was not in his life and he was raised by his mother, Patricia Encinas, who used to work multiple jobs just to make ends meet and take care of her children. She would later switch over to the service industry and started working in various roles at restaurants, including as a chef and manager.

"My mom was a single mother, working three to four jobs. She would take a bunch of crazy, grimy jobs at first, then she got into the restaurant business. Then she started to manage restaurants. She was also a chef for a long time. She did a lot in the restaurant business," Gastelum said in an interview.

He started his martial arts journey in school with wrestling and would go on to win the 5A Division II AIA state wrestling title as a student of the Cibola High School. He made his pro-MMA debut in 2010 and went undefeated before being called up for 'TUF 17' in 2013.

Gastelum turned professional in 2010, making his debut on the local Mexican MMA circuit. He went on a five-fight win streak before being invited to 'The Ultimate Fighter' season 17 and won the finals with a split decision win over his teammate Uriah Hall.

Because of this win, he was offered a UFC contract and made his first UFC appearance in a successful welterweight bout opposite Brian Melancon at UFC Fight Night 27 in August 2013. Gastelum won this bout via a fantastic first-round knockout, which would set the tone for his career the next year.
