Jannik Sinner's early life and parents

Jannik Sinner was born on August 16, 2001, to Hanspeter and Siglinde Sinner in Innichen/San Candido, South Tyrol, Northern Italy. He grew up in Sexten, where his father worked as a chef and his mother as a waitress at a ski lodge. He also has a brother, Marc. Sinner began skiing and playing tennis at the age of three. Before he devoted his life to tennis, he was one of Italy's top junior skiers from eight to twelve years old.

He won a national championship in giant slalom at the age of eight and finished second at the age of twelve. Sinner dropped tennis for a year as he was practicing skiing when he was seven years old. However, his father persuaded him to return. When he resumed playing, Heribert Mayr became his first regular coach. Sinner opted to give up skiing and football at the age of 13 and instead focus on tennis.

He preferred it over skiing because he wanted to compete directly against an opponent. He also wanted to have a wider margin of error over the length of the competition. Sinner also wanted to participate in an individual sport where he could make all of the decisions, which he would not be able to do in a team activity such as football.
