Early life and family background
Jack Sock was born in Lincoln to Larry Sock and Pamela Sock. He began playing tennis when he was eight years old. Sock travelled from Nebraska to Kansas with his mother and older brother Eric when he was 12 years old to train at the Mike Wolf Tennis Academy, while his father remained in Lincoln to continue working as a financial advisor.
He graduated from Blue Valley North High School in Overland Park, Kansas, with an 80-0 KSHSAA 6A high school tennis record and four consecutive state singles championships. He also played doubles with his brother Eric in high school, and they won the team state championship together in Jack's sophomore year.
On-court career
ITF Junior Career
Sock rose to No.22 in the world combined rankings as a junior in October 2010. At the Pan American Championships in October 2008, he competed in his first ITF junior competition at the age of 16. At his third junior competition, the 2009 US Open, he reached the semifinals of the junior doubles with Matthew Kandath.
Sock, on the other hand, appeared in only two more junior tournaments: the Dunlop Orange Bowl in 2009 and the junior singles at the 2010 US Open. He obtained a wildcard admission into this competition and advanced to the final. In three sets, he defeated fellow American Denis Kudla to become the first American to win the junior championships since Andy Roddick in 2000.
ATP Professional Career
Sock reached the finals of the USA F3 event in 2011. He also began to compete in a few Challenger-level tournaments, with his best result being a quarterfinal appearance at the Dallas Challenger. In 2011, he also competed in the main draw of the Miami Masters. As the 2010 US Junior champion, he gained a wildcard into the 2011 US Open, where he defeated Marc Gicquel in four sets.
In the next round, he faced his idol, Andy Roddick, and lost in straight sets. However, Sock's major breakthrough came in the mixed doubles, as he reached the final with Melanie Oudin and won their first and only mixed doubles slam.
After such a fantastic season, he returned to playing Challenger level tournaments in singles in 2012. He competed in several tournaments and won the Futures tournament at Plantation and the Tiburon Challenger.
2013 started off rather slow for the American player. He encountered several losses in tournaments. Qualifying for the French Open main draw, he went as far as round two. Failing to qualify for Wimbledon, he aimed to go big in the US Open. His efforts improved a bit as he went as far as the third round. He entered the top 100 in that season.
In singles, 2014 was not vastly different. Playing the four slams and six masters would be the biggest change. But in doubles, Sock would go big and win his first grand slam in men's doubles. Beating every pair in their path, Sock, along with Vasek Pospisil, won the Wimbledon Championships.
His singles performance would improve in 2015. He had a great start to the year by winning the US Men's Clay Court Championships, his first singles title. He played three slams and achieved better results in the French Open and the US Open. In Masters, his record would also improve, and he entered the top 25 for the first time in his career.
Once again, he would play much better in doubles as he won his first Masters title that year. Along with Pospisil, he won the Indian Wells Masters and would play two more ATP 1000 finals with him.
Besides appearing in the quarterfinals in the Shanghai and Paris Masters, his singles tour did not change much in 2016. Participation in the slams saw slight improvement as he reached the fourth round in the US Open and ended the year ranked 23. He played doubles with Pospisil in Indian Wells, where they lost, and once again in the Italian Open they were beaten by the legendary Bryan brothers.
He then partnered with John Isner for the rest of the season, and the duo won the Shanghai Masters. Prior to this win, Sock played all three divisions in the Rio Olympics. He won a bronze medal with Steve Johnson in doubles and a gold medal with Bethanie Mattek-Sands in mixed doubles.
In 2017, Sock won his first and only singles ATP 1000 title at the Paris Masters, which launched him to rank 8, his career high. He played in the ATP Finals and made it to the semifinals before he was eventually eliminated by winner Grigor Dimitrov. He didn't play much in doubles but reached the final of the Miami Open with Nicholas Monroe, which ensued a fall in rankings.
Despite a great 2017 season, Sock would not be able to recreate his previous years' feats. In the 2018 season, he did not go far in many tournaments, with quarterfinals in the Shanghai Masters as his best finish. Several losses would demolish his standing, and he ended the year ranked 106 in singles.
In doubles, the scenario was the exact opposite. After his absence in the Australian Open, Sock played with Isner in the BNP Paribas Open and once again won the tournament. He later partnered with one of the legendary Bryan brothers duo, Mike Bryan. The two demolished the competition at Wimbledon and the US Open.
The wins launched Sock to rank 2 and Bryan to 1, which qualified them for the men's doubles ATP Finals, which they would go on to win and solidify their status.
In 2019, Sock's tennis would become turbulent due to an unfortunate injury in two ligaments in the thumb. He did not participate in most of the tournaments, which caused him to be absent from the ATP rankings. A similar situation occurred in doubles, but he maintained a rank, albeit it was 119.
His game would not improve in 2020 and 2021 as he could not qualify for the majors or the Masters in both singles and doubles. There would be some revival of his doubles form in 2022 as he won the Indian Wells for the third time, but despite that accomplishment, Sock was unable to climb back to the top.
This year, he did not participate in any singles tournament besides the Indian Wells. In doubles, he played till the semifinal in Indian Wells and round 1 of Wimbledon.
Going into the US Open, Sock announced that he would retire from the sport after a 13-year-long career.
