God of War: Ragnarok 2021 - Release Date, Trailer, and Platforms
God of War: Ragnarok is set to become the latest addition to the widely successful and loved God of War franchise. With Sony Interactive Entertainment acting as the publisher, the game is currently in development under one of its first-party studios.
Even though this upcoming game is yet to bear an official title, it will become the ninth core entry developed by Santa Monica Studios in the God of War series, and serve as a sequel to 2018's God of War.
God of War: Ragnarok reveal and trailer
The developers officially revealed the new God of War game during the PlayStation 5 Showcase on September 16, 2020. During the closing section of the event, fans got the first glance at a short teaser trailer for the upcoming sequel. Even though the trailer did not confirm the title's name, it showed some cryptic teasers and declared, "Ragnarok is coming".
This is what led fans to speculate that 'God of War: Ragnarok' would be the game's title. However, there is no confirmation regarding the same from Santa Monica Studios or Sony.
God of War: Ragnarok release date and will it be available on PS4?
The same teaser trailer also revealed the probable release date for the new God of War title. Santa Monica Studios and SIE have scheduled the game for release sometime in 2021.
Just like previous God of War games, the upcoming one will also be a PlayStation exclusive, as announced in the PS5 showcase event in September 2020. Therefore, it is expected to be available exclusively on the new-gen PlayStation 5 console.
Fans have speculated whether the latest God of War would also grace the previous-gen PlayStation 4 console. This was after Sony revealed its plans to release a few other titles on the PS4 that were initially assumed as PS5 exclusives. Horizon Forbidden West is one such example.
At this moment, there is not much clarity on whether this game will be a PS5 exclusive, or also be available on the PS4.
God of War: Ragnarok gameplay and story
Even though the untitled sequel's development is far from complete, it is already among the most anticipated game's in 2021. Besides being nominated for Most Anticipated Game at?The Game Awards 2020, it bagged the PlayStation Blog's award for the same category.
Set in the Norse environment, the game will take place in ancient Norway. Similar to the previous title, Kratos and his young son will feature as protagonists once again.
The ending of 2018's God of War contained significant hints for an impending sequel. Later, in April 2019, a teaser surfaced in the form of a PS4 background theme. In it, fans spotted some Nordic runes etched across the side of Kratos and Atreus' boat, giving away a cryptic message, "Ragnarok is coming".
This tagline points towards the initiation of Ragnarok in the upcoming God of War game, as foretold in its 2018 prequel. In Norse mythology, Ragnarok refers to a series of events that bring about the destruction of the world.
