Who is Frances Tiafoe?

Fondly called the Big Foe, Francis Tiafoe, born on January 20, 1998, is an American professional tennis player. He hails from Hyattsville, Maryland, and turned into a pro in 2015. He is currently ranked 18th in the men’s ATP rankings but will be ranked as high as world number 10 in June 2023. He has won three ATP singles titles but has yet to show his might at the ATP Masters 1000, year-end finals, or the Grand Slams. Since 2015, Tiafoe has been dating Ayan Broomfield, a professional tennis player on the ITF circuit, but they only made their relationship public three years later.

Frances Tiafoe’s early life

Frances Tiafoe was born to immigrant parents Constant and Alphina Tiafoe and came from a poor background. His father worked as a janitor at a tennis center in Maryland. With the job, he also received living quarters in the center where Frances and his brother stayed for most of the week. His mother worked as a nurse and would have the kids on her nights off.

Frances never went to a conventional school, as he had to move a lot for tennis. He got his diploma from Laurel Springs School, which is an online school based in California, USA. The parents decided to get Frances and Franklin, his brother, into tennis, as they were able to have them coached for free. Since the two were five, Constant had them enrolled in the Junior Tennis Champion Centre. Both learned much of their tennis there. Misha Kouznetsov eventually took on Frances when he was eight.

Tiafoe’s parents hail from Sierra Leone and moved out of the country as it was torn apart due to internal issues. Constant used to work in a diamond mine and escaped the mine and fled to the UK in 1988. Constant moved to the USA in 1993. Alphina Tiafoe was able to escape her country after she won a green card in a lottery and arrived in the US in 1996.

The two met in the USA and connected well as they were from the same country. They married and had Franklin and Frances Tiafoe in 1998. Frances and his twin Franklin started learning tennis at a young age and have grown up with the sport. Franklin, unlike his brother, wasn't as disciplined and kept encountering bad luck with the sport. But he still plays and aims to become a coach soon.

Frances Tiafoe’s girlfriend

Frances Tiafoe is surrounded with people associated with tennis, that also includes his girlfriend. Ayan Broomfield, Tiafoe's girlfriend, is also a tennis player. Although she hadn't advanced as far as Tiafoe, she still enjoyed a strong tennis journey. Broomfield was born in Toronto, Canada, on August 13, 1997. Tiafoe and Broomfield first met through a common friend, Vickie Duval, who suggested the two should date. The two started dating in 2015 but made their relationship public after three years. The couple has a massive fan following on social media platforms, and one of their videos on George Floyd helped Frances receive the Arthur Ashe Humanitarian Award. Ayan’s net worth is between $1 million and $2 million, but he also earns money through sponsorship deals.

Frances Tiafoe’s net worth 2024

Frances Tiafoe’s net worth is estimated to be $8 million. As of 2024, Fritz has won $10,438,756 in prize money so far. Ever since beating Rafael Nadal at the 2022 US Open, Tiafoe’s net worth has taken a steep rise in the past couple of years.

Frances Tiafoe’s career

Frances Tiafoe made his ATP debut in 2015 after enjoying decent success at the junior level. After grinding for three years straight and losing to top players across surfaces, Tiafoe’s maiden moment of glory came at the 2018 Delray Beach Open, where he defeated Peter Gojowczyk in the final and also won his maiden ATP title. The win also made him the youngest American since Andy Roddick to win an ATP title. Later that year, Tiafoe also reached the fourth round of the Miami Masters, his best performance at the event to date. He also reached the final of the Portugal Open and followed it up with a third round at Wimbledon, breaking the top 50 of the ATP rankings.

In 2019, Tiafoe raised the bar at the Australian Open, defeating Kevin Anderson and Grigor Dimitrov, making it to the fourth round, before losing to Rafael Nadal. Unfortunately, he could not build up to this start and struggled for the majority of the next two seasons. At the 2021 US Open, he reached the fourth round for the second straight year, the only American since Andy Roddick and Mardy Fish to achieve the feat in 2011–12. However, his best at the US Open came in 2022.

Tiafoe reached the fourth round of the US Open after defeating Diego Schwartzman, but he came up with an upset when he defeated Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinals, the biggest win of his career to date. He also became only the third American after Andy Roddick and Blake to beat Nadal in a grand slam. Tiafoe made it to the semifinals but lost to Carlos Alcaraz in a grueling match that lasted for five sets and over four hours.

2023 started off on a good note for Tiafoe, where he helped the US tennis team win the United Cup, beating Italy in the final. After reaching the third round at the Australian Open, he broke into the top 15 rankings for the first time in his career. At Indian Wells, he reached the semifinals before losing to Daniil Medvedev.

Though he emerged victorious at the US Men’s Clay Court Championships, he failed to keep the momentum at the Grand Slams, losing early at the French Open and Wimbledon and making it to the quarterfinals of the US Open, where he lost to compatriot Ben Shelton.

The start of 2024 was good for Tiafoe, who made it to the semifinals of the Delray Beach Open but made an early exit in Round 2 at the Australian Open.
