It was her family who tried convincing Thompson-Herah that she was "born to run," while she wasn't even the best runner in her class. But two years later, she quit the track and field team but her journey only went uphill. After graduating from Christiana High School, she ran for Manchester High School during her time at school. She made her competitive debut in 2009 as a junior athlete but finished fourth at the Jamaican ISSA Grace Kennedy Boys and Girls Championships.

Elaine headed to the track determined to compete in the 4 × 100 meters relay at the 2013 Central American and Caribbean Championships in Morelia. She ran to victory as an integral part of the Jamaican team, taking home the gold in 43.58 seconds. The Jamaican's efforts paid off once more in 2014 as she ranked sixth in the national competition and won her first intercollegiate title. She continued to gain momentum leading up to the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow when she won another gold in the preliminary 4 × 100 m relay.
