Dejounte Murray was born in Seattle, Washington on September 19, 1996. He attended Rainier Beach High School in Seattle, Washington- a school which has produced a number of good Basketball players including the likes of Nate Robinson, and C.J. Giles. He was the Seattle Times State Player of the Year and earned the title of Washington Mr. Basketball during his time there.

He played one season of college basketball for the Washington Huskies, where he earned second-team all-conference honors in the Pac-12 as a freshman in 2015–16.

In 2016, Murray declared for the NBA draft, after forgoing his final three years of college eligibility. San Antonio Spurs drafted him in the first round of the 2016 NBA draft with the 29th overall pick. In his second season, he was selected in the NBA All-defensive Second Team.
