Born on February 22, 1988, in Clovis, California, USA, Colby Covington was raised in a middle-class family by his parents Brad and Noelle Covington. He spent much of his early life in Oregon, where he attended the Thurston High School in Springfield. Taking after his father's passion for wrestling, he started learning the sport and began impressing everyone in his school as a wrestler. He then won the state championship as a senior, and this earned him the attention of college scouts who got him enrolled at Iowa Central Community College.
In his college years, Covington then won the NJCAA Championships in 2007 at 165lbs while also being roommates with Jon Jones. After finding major success as a junior college-level athlete, he soon took a transfer to Oregon State University.
