What is Clash at the Coliseum 2024?

The 2024 Busch Light Clash at The Coliseum will be held on February 4, 2024, at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, California. This is the third consecutive year that the race will take place at the Coliseum. From 1979 to 2021, the event took place at Daytona International Speedway.

Where is the Busch Light Clash 2024 being held?

It was only on September 14, 2021, that NASCAR announced the Busch Light Clash to be moved to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. With this pre-season event in California, fans in good numbers turn up to witness the race. The race course will be 0.25 miles long.

With over 150 laps of entertaining race on display, the Clash at the Coliseum will have 23 cars in the final heat. Interestingly, the Coliseum is also home to the University of Southern California Trojans football team and multiple Olympic Games. With this year's race being the 46th running of the event, it is interesting to see who triumphs in California, especially with some changes involved in the format.

What is the format for the Clash at the Coliseum 2024?

Last year, 27 cars raced at the Coliseum. However, this year it will be only 23 as the 2023 event resulted in several cautions because of the increase in the number of participants. It is worth noting that the Clash is open to only the 36 Chartered NASCAR Cup Series teams.

There are no changes in the format as far as the Heat Races are concerned. The top five drivers in each heat race advance to the main event. Interestingly for the fans, the Heat Races will take a day before the feature race with each race 25 laps long.

The main race will see 23 cars start the race. Amazingly, it will also involve a timed half-time break at Lap 75. It goes without saying that only green flag laps will count in the main race and that Heat Races should end under green flag conditions. Given its unpredictability, it is difficult to pinpoint which driver has a better chance to triumph on Sunday.

The past winners of the Clash at the Coliseum

As it is with many other sports, a first win brings plenty of momentum early in the campaign. Winning at the Busch Clash has helped many drivers to win the Daytona 500 in the past. On six different occasions, Cup Series drivers were able to do so. Bobby Allison did it in 1982, Bill Elliott in 1987, Dale Jarret did it in 1996 and 2000, Jeff Gordon in 1997, and Denny Hamlin in 2016.

While only Hamlin remains the active driver to do it, he is undoubtedly a favorite on Sunday with three wins in total to his name in the event. From the current lot, even Jimmie Johnson (2005, 2019), Kyle Busch (2012, 2021) and Joey Logano (2017, 2022) know what it takes to win in the Busch Light Clash.

Among them, it is only Logano who has won it in California. With Team Penske being a strong force in the last two years, it is difficult to write them off for the weekend. Last year, Martin Truex Jr surprised everyone with a win. Without a doubt, any driver has the chance to triumph come Sunday.

What is the eligibility for the Clash at the Coliseum?

As mentioned earlier, 10 drivers each will be participating in four 25-lap Heat Races. The top five drivers in each heat will directly advance to the main event on Sunday. However, the drivers below the fifth position in each Heat Race will fight it off in the afternoon's 75-lap Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ).

The best two finishers in the LCQ make for the 21st and 22nd positions in the main event race. The 23rd position is reserved for the driver with the highest finish in 2023 and the one who did not transfer via the Heat Race or LCQ. This year, Ryan Blaney has his place booked for the main event.

With some new faces in the Cup Series this year, it is interesting to see how they perform at the Busch Clash.

The Entry List for the Clash at the Coliseum

It is an exciting year for the Cup Series fans, with many drivers coming in with their new paint schemes. While some of them will debut at the LA Coliseum, it is interesting to get the first look. At the same time, the track in California will welcome rookies Josh Berry, Zane Smith, and Carson Hocevar for their debut Coliseum race.

Additionally, Noah Gragson and Justin Haley will be racing with different teams this time around. While the other faces participating are more or less familiar with the demands of the race, it will be interesting to see how John Hunter Nemechek performs on his return to the Cup Series.
