Bryan, his father, is a former professional tennis player and Florida Gators men's tennis coach. His mother, Lisa Witsken Shelton, mostly played on the junior tour. His uncle, Todd Witsken, was also a professional tennis player. His sister, Emma, plays tennis at the collegiate level at the University of Florida.
Shelton was born in Atlanta, Georgia. There his father served as the head coach of the Georgia Tech women's tennis team when Ben was still an infant. He now resides in Gainesville, Florida, and attended Buchholz High School.
When he was a child, Ben Shelton did not want to play tennis. Instead, he played football and preferred to make a career in the sport. Even though both of his parents had a deep bond with tennis, they did not put pressure on him to play the racket sport. ITF Junior Career
At the age of 16, Shelton pondered competing in ITF Junior events abroad, but his father discouraged him, stating, "Why do you need to travel abroad when you're not the best [player in the United States]?" Shelton gives utmost credit to his father's advice as the reason for his tennis growth, because he was not constantly traveling and instead had a routine.

Shelton reached a career-high of No. 3 in the USTA Boy's 18s division and No. 306 in the ITF Junior. He finished third in the 2020 USTA Boys 18s Singles Winter Nationals and first in the 2019 USTA Boys 16s Doubles Clay Court tournament.
College Career
Shelton first decided to play collegiate tennis for the Florida Gators. He played the sport under his father Bryan Shelton's tutelage. The 20-year-old finance major was imperative in leading the Gators to their first national championship. Shelton had a 10-2 singles record and won the Gators' championship-clinching match.
Shelton starred as a sophomore in 2022, finishing 37-5 in singles matches and capturing the NCAA Singles Championship over August Holmgren. He concluded the year as the ITA's No. 1 singles player.
ATP Professional Career
Shelton reached his first Challenger final in July 2022 at the Rome Challenger. His ATP Tour debut took place at the 2022 Atlanta Open where he played after receiving a wild card. He then gained a wild card into the Cincinnati Masters, where he reached the third round before being ousted by John Isner. Shelton would then receive a wildcard to compete in the main draw of the US Open in August 2022, marking it as his first Grand Slam appearance.
He was defeated in five sets in the first round. However, in his opening round match, he delivered the then second-fastest serve of the US Open event at 139 miles per hour.
By the end of the year, he had won three challenger titles in three weeks and debuted in the top 100 rankings by the end of the year.
