Melbourne Park is set to host the 110th edition of the season opening Grand Slam, the Australian Open 2022. The tournament's first edition was held in 1905 and interestingly, it was played on a grass surface back then; in 1988, the switch to hard courts was made. Along with the US Open, it's one of the two hard-court Grand Slam events on the tennis calendar.

Players to watch at the Australian Open 2022

Naomi Osaka, the defending champion in women's singles, will be making her comeback at the Australian Open 2022 after having withdrawn from the tour since US Open 2021. She has already won the tournament twice before and is excellent on hard-courts and thus, will definitely be one to keep an eye on.

The World No. 1 Ashleigh Barty will be another key player as the Aussie will look to capitalize on her home advantage. Garbine Muguruza, the Spaniard, will also be looking to build on her WTA Finals 2021 win in Mexico and grab the third major of her distinguished career.

On the men's side, World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev is going to be a player to watch as the Russian will try to grab the second Grand Slam title of his career. The hard-court is Daniil's favorite surface as well and he'll try to better his performance from 2021, where he reached the final.

Alexander Zverev will be another key figure in the competition and will be riding the high of his ATP Finals win in Turin. 20-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal is going to make his comeback at the 'Happy Slam' and will be hoping to win his record-breaking 21st Major title.

Australian Open 2022 dates

The Australian Open 2022 will begin on 17 January and continue till 30 January. In 2021, the event was shifted to February from its regular mid-January scheduling, but the dates will be back to usual in 2022.

The schedule for the Australian Open 2022 involves events during the Day and Night sessions for the dates of the tournament. For the latter stages of the competition beyond the 27th of January, tickets for the Twilight sessions are also an option.

The 2022 Australian Open in Melbourne

The Australian Open 2022 will be held at Melbourne Park in Melbourne, Victoria. The venue, formerly known as "Flinders Park", was initially developed in 1988. It includes courts named after Australian legends Rod Laver and Margaret Court - the Rod Laver Arena and Margaret Court Arena and a third, John Cain Arena.

Laver won 11 Grand Slam titles in his career and Margaret is the record holder for the most Grand Slam wins in women's tennis with 24 singles titles.

The 2022 edition of the Australian Open will see a historic change in the scheduling of the women's semi-final. Both of the women's semi-finals will be held during the night session on Thursday, 27 January 2022. The change in schedule came after 100 years after women began competing at the Australian Open.

Craig Tiley, the Tournament Director of the Australian Open, had said, "As we celebrate 100 years of women’s competition at what is now the Australian Open, I’m delighted to further showcase the women’s game by scheduling the semifinals in the prime time TV spot of Thursday night."

Australian Open 2021 results

Naomi Osaka is the defending champion in women's singles who defeated Jennifer Brady in the 2021 final to grab her second Australian Open title. In men's singles, World No. 1 Novak Djokovic won the 2021 edition of the tournament. It was his record 9th title at the Happy Slam.

In the women's doubles event, Elise Mertens and Aryna Sabalenka grabbed the title. Ivan Dodig and Filip Polasek were the victors in the men's doubles. Coming into the 2022 Australian Open, Barbora Krejcikova and Rajeev Ram are the mixed doubles defending champions.
