Anthony Oluwafemi Olaseni Joshua or 'AJ' as fans fondly call him has seen a meteoric to stardom in the heavyweight division. The two-time unified heavyweight champion has seen a lot of success ever since his professional debut in July 2013.
Other than the traditional juggernauts of the heavyweight division like Mohammed Ali and Mike Tyson, only a handful have had more success and have dominated the international boxing scene like the Englishman.
He has successfully amassed a series of accolades over the course of his career. 'AJ' won the IBF title in 2016, the WBA (Super) title in 2017, the WBO in March 2018, the IBO title in 2017, and the British and Commonwealth title at the regional level from 2014 to 2016.
Athletics has always been AJ's strength, from soccer to track and field. He has always been a prodigy. Joshua attempted to try his hand at boxing at the age of 18 after taking his cousin's advice.
Who is Anthony Joshua
Anthony Joshua holds the prestigious title of being a former unified world heavyweight champion. His journey in the boxing world began in his late teens, transitioning from a footballer and athlete to a formidable boxer. Joshua’s transformation from a troubled teenager to a heavyweight professional is a testament to his determination and resilience. His physical prowess and skill led him to an undefeated streak during his amateur career, culminating in a gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics.
Joshua’s meteoric rise from the amateur ranks to world championships has solidified his reputation as a powerful puncher and a formidable opponent. Out of the six heavyweight belts globally, Joshua has previously conquered four holding them all at the same time, underscoring his dominance in the sport. His achievements and persona led him to be a contender for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year, further cementing his place in the annals of boxing history.
Anthony Joshua's Early Life
Anthony Joshua was born ‘Anthony Oluwafemi Olaseni Joshua’ on October 15, 1989, in Watford, Hertfordshire, UK. However, he spent a part of his childhood in his parent’s home country, Nigeria. His mother, Yeta Odusanya, is Nigerian, and his father, Robert Joshua, is part Nigerian and part Irish. He went to school in a Nigerian town called Ikene. He was 12 years old when his parents split, and his mother decided to move back.
AJ returned to Watford to attend Kings Langley Secondary School. He was nicknamed 'Femi' by his friends and teachers because of his middle name 'Oluwafemi'. Upon joining Kings Langley Secondary School, Anthony Joshua inclined towards sports and doubled down in that domain.
The former champion excelled at football and athletics while growing up and showed great promise as a sprinter when he broke the 100m record where he completed the run in 11.6 seconds.
Joshua grew up in Meriden Estate in Garston, Hertfordshire. The area was infamous for its crimes and drug problems. Growing up in this region, he found himself caught up in fights and all sorts of troubles as a teenager. Before being absorbed by boxing, he worked as a bricklayer. His cousin, Ben Lleyemi, took him to the Finchley Amateur Boxing Club in Barnet. This proved to be a turning point as he soon began training as a boxer here.
Anthony Joshua’s Girlfriend and Children
As of early 2024, Joshua doesn't appear to be in a romantic relationship. Fans have continued to be curious about the star's dating life throughout his career, despite the boxer keeping his private life out of the spotlight. In 2022 AJ's supporters were sent into a frenzy when he made an appearance at a UFC show in London wearing what looked like a wedding ring. It was later revealed, however, that the piece of jewelry was actually a £300 Oura Ring - a hi-tech fitness tracker.
AJ has been linked to a number of famous women since embarking on his sporting career, including supermodels Cara Delevingne and Bella Hadid. In October 2023 the boxer dismissed rumors of any A-list flings that have hit the headlines, saying: "I haven’t actually been with any of those girls, by the way." AJ then admitted that he was dating, but nobody famous. He said: "I’ve had girlfriends, but you could be in the local supermarket or in the local petrol station when we meet."
Joshua himself once said he doesn't have a lot of time for girlfriends, and couldn't see himself settling down until his boxing career is over. He once said, "If people can ride with me for the next 10 to 12 years I would really appreciate it, but if they can't foresee the future I'd rather they jump off the boat because I can't stop for no one right now."
One former girlfriend who does play a significant part in AJ's life is Nicole Osbourne, the mother of his son, named Joseph Bayley Temiloluwa Prince Joshua, affectionately nicknamed “JJ”. JJ was born in October 2015 to Joshua and his ex-girlfriend, Nicole Osbourne. At present, Joseph is 7 years old. Joshua and Osbourne share custody of Joseph and maintain an amicable relationship. They are often seen together at public events.
It was reported at the time that Joshua had bought a £500,000 flat in Finchley, North London for his son and ex-girlfriend. Although Anthony and Nicole are not in a relationship, the star has showered the mother of his son with praise. Speaking to Louis Theroux in the documentary maker's BBC Two series, Anthony said: “She's an amazing woman, you know. We got together in 2005, we were about 15 or 16 years old. I have so much respect for her."

Anthony Joshua: Career Timeline
Boxing under the promotional banner of Matchroom Boxing, Joshua burst onto the professional scene in 2013. He took on Emanuele Leo and beat him in the first round at the O2 Arena in London. Ring Magazine named Joshua The Prospect of the Year, just a year after his emergence in the professional boxing circuit.
Joshua bagged a silver in the World Championship back in 2011, which got the ball rolling for the Londoner. However, he became a star when he won the Gold Medal at the 2012 London Olympics against former World Champion, Roberto Cammarelle.
Joshua conceded the only defeat of his career at the hands of Andy Ruiz Jr. The loss actively stripped him of all his titles. However, AJ overcame Ruiz in a rematch in 2019 and reclaimed his lost treasures, simultaneously becoming the two-time heavyweight champion of the world.
He extended his record to 24-1-0 heading into 2021, after beating Kubrat Pulev. After Pulev, Joshua set himself up for one of the biggest upsets in boxing history when he went against Oleksandr Usyk on September 25, 2021. Joshua faced the highly skilled Ukrainian boxer Oleksandr Usyk at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. Usyk presented a formidable challenge with his technical proficiency and slick movement. Despite Joshua's efforts, Usyk outboxed him throughout the fight, resulting in a unanimous decision victory for Usyk. This defeat marked a setback for Joshua losing him the WBA, WBO, and IBF heavyweight belts, and also added an intriguing chapter to his career.
Determined to regain his title again, he activated the rematch clause and went up against Usyk a second time on August 20, 2022. In their highly anticipated rematch, Usyk once again emerged victorious, securing a split-decision win over Joshua. The fight added another chapter to their rivalry and raised questions about Joshua's future in the heavyweight division.

After those defeats, he returned to the winning ways, defeating Jermaine Franklin Jr. and Robert Helenius, the latter by KO. Anthony Joshua put on a career reinvigorating performance against Wallin by smashing him with powerful jabs that forced his corner to throw in the towel in round 5 ending the fight via a TKO. Now after a successful comeback to form in 2023, he now prepares for the Predator, Francis Ngannou in hopes of eventually getting a shot at winning back his titles.
