Who is Alexander Zverev?

Alexander Zverev is a German professional tennis player. He is currently the world number six and former world number two ATP tennis player. He was born on April 20, 1997, to parents Irina and Alexander Sr., both of whom were tennis players. Zverev started playing tennis at the age of three and admired Roger Ferderer.

In the first Grand Slam of 2024, Zverev started off very well as he went on to reach the Semi-Finals of the Australian Open. After a very intense five-setter match, Zverev lost to Daniil Medvedev. At just 26, Zverev has shown great promise, and he might win his maiden Grand Slam soon.

Alexander Zverev's parents, Irina and Alexander Mikhailovich Zverev, were professional tennis players from the Soviet Union. Their career ranking rose to World Number 4 and 175 respectively, during the 1990s. Irina and Alexander raised both their sons, Mischa and Alexander "Sascha" Zverev, to follow in their footsteps, into the world of tennis.

Zverev played his first pro match at the Germany F14 Futures and he reached the final in the season-ending USA F32 Futures as one of the youngest players ever. Interestingly, In 2017, Zverev also became the youngest player to win a Masters 1000 title since Djokovic in 2007. Zverev also won the gold medal in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Recently, at the Australian Open 2024, Sophia Thomalla was seen cheering for him. In December 2021, Zverev revealed the importance of Thomalla in his life. In an interview with 'Tennis Channel', Zverev said, “I play extremely well with her in my back, and I hope that will continue to be the case next year and maybe even get better. I haven’t achieved all of my goals yet.”

Although Zverev is yet to win his first Grand Slam title, he has a lot of other valuable achievements. In 2015, Zverev was named the ATP newcomer of the year. In 2019, Zverev was rated the 16th most marketable athlete in the world by SportsPro. Zverev finished in the top 10  for 5 straight years from 2017-2021.

Zverev defeated the world's number one, Novak Djokovic, en route to the 2018 Nitto ATP Finals, 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and 2021 Nitto ATP Finals championships. Alexander Zverev reached his first Grand Slam final at the 2020 US Open. In the 2022 French Open, Zverev tore 3 ligaments in his right ankle. He then returned in January 2023.

Alexander Zverev had never won an ATP match before he reached the last four at the International German Open at the age of 17.

In the 2016 Halle Open semi-finals, he defeated Roger Federer and ended his streak of ten consecutive appearances in the final. He won his first ATP title at the 2016 St. Petersburg Open.

Zverev won the 2018 ATP World Tour Finals crown by defeating Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic in the semifinals and finals, respectively. It remains his biggest title up to this point in his career.

In 2018 and 2019, he reached the quarterfinals at the French Open. At the 2019 Laver Cup, Zverev helped Team Europe clinch the title after defeating Milos Raonic of Team World in the decider.

His best Grand Slam performance came at the 2020 US Open, where he reached the final, and the 2020 Australian Open, where he reached the semifinals of the event. In 2021, he won a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics.

In 2021, Alexander Zverev ended the season with a gold medal he won at the Tokyo Olympics and a 59-15 record. He also won the Nitto ATP Finals in the same year. Additionally, Zverev also became the fourth player in the history of the competition to beat the world's top two ranked players as he defeated Djokovic in the semi-finals and then Daniil Medvedev in the finals.

He then continued to say, "The gold medal for me, the value for me is incredible because you’re not playing for yourself, you’re playing for your whole country. Alexander Zverev was just 3 when his parents discovered that he had diabetes. Despite all the complications, the German tennis player continued to work on his passion and has made a name for himself today. Although he has become very famous, he did not forget his roots. He founded the Alexander Zverev Foundation in 2022, which aims to provide medical facilities and support to diabetic children all over the world.

In July last year, the Foundation raised 10,94,978 USD to help children suffering from diabetes. The official Instagram page of the Foundation announced this news by saying, “The Alexander Zverev Foundation event was a dream. We couldn’t have asked for anything better.”
