Brie Larson’s portrayal of Captain Marvel in the 2019 MCU film was highly praised. Her physical transformation for the role received recognition from numerous fitness enthusiasts. However, not everyone was impressed, particularly those with expertise in Sports Physiology, such as individuals holding doctorates in the field.
Dr. Michael Israetel, a bodybuilder and fitness coach, recently released a video on his YouTube channel, Renaissance Periodization, where he humorously reviews the training routine of the 33-year-old actress for a duration of 9 months in preparation for her role. The video focuses on the Brie Larson training footage shared by Men’s Health, providing insights and shedding light on her workout regimen.

The segment of “Full Body Foam Roll” for “1-3 minutes in each position” of Larson’s training video didn’t impress the professor of Sports Science. Jason Walsh, the trainer of the actress, was observed explaining the significance of incorporating a foam roller warm-up session.
“I use it before the workout and after before because I can get adjustments down my spine and then afterwards it’s more for recovery,” said Walsh. However countering the celebrity trainer’s opinion, Israetel added, “So foam rolling doesn’t adjust your spine, it just makes you feel nice, but if that works to get you more confident about your workout, that’s pretty good.”
He further explains, “The foam roller does not help you recover in any way, shape or form that is entirely illusory,” on a serious note. The bodybuilding coach became a bit serious about busting the myth surrounding the foam roller exercises and later realized, “This was supposed to be comedic and I’m just pissed.” Earlier, Israetel criticized Jason Walsh’s training regime for Bradley Cooper for the lead role in American Sniper.

The training regime of the actor included a trap bar deadlift for bulking up for the film. However, Israetel is critical about the exercise as he claims it to be unsafe for building muscles. According to the coach, the exercise involves training several muscle groups at once, and this will not let each muscle expand to the maximum.

“You need to impose the maximum amount of spinal loading and that just seems like a risk-reward ratio that doesn’t make any f**king sense,” he further added reasoning out why trap bar deadlift is bad.
