2 Years Before Signing $53,827,872 Contract, LeBron James’ Teammate Plotted To Go Undrafted for a Two-Way With Lakers: “All About Playing the Long Game”

In 2021, the Los Angeles Lakers stumbled onto a treasure. The Lakers were left without a strong option at shooting guard in the 2021 draught after dealing Kentavious Caldwell-Pope to the Washington Wizards for Russell Westbrook. Austin Reaves stepped in at this point. In his short time with the Lakers, Reaves has become close to both LeBron James and The King. But prior to joining the Lakers, he was not selected in the 2021 NBA Draught.

Reaves reveals his masterplan to join LeBron James, and the Lakers

Since signing a two-way contract with the Los Angeles Lakers, Austin Reaves has seen an incredible journey to the top. Reaves has demonstrated his abilities as a terrific shooter and playmaker in just two years.

In conversation with former NBA players, Stephen Jackson and Matt Barnes, Reaves revealed his masterplan before the draft that landed him in Los Angeles. “It feels great,” he said when asked about securing his major deal. “Like I said, everything comes full circle and all I needed was an opportunity and I knew that….my agency putting me in a good position to have all that. We could have got drafted 42nd to Detroit, but kind of declined that to kind of put me in LA for a better spot.”

Reaves has a pivotal role in Los Angeles

Reaves has a stellar on-court record to go along with his achievements off the court. When the Lakers needed some offensive execution, the Arkansas native has stood up. His crucial shots and wonderfully timed passes have frequently improved the Lakers offensive. He also made history by recording a triple-double as the first undrafted rookie. It was expected that the 25-year-old would land a hefty contract after averaging 16.9 PPG and 4.6 APG during the Lakers' incredible run to the Western Conference Finals. However, this agreement will keep Reaves in Los Angeles for an additional 4 years.
