2020 has been a year full of twists and turns all over the world. The gaming industry has also had its fair share of controversies during these troubling times. Although, one of the most shocking developments so far has been the Epic Games vs. Apple lawsuit.

It all began when Fortnite on iOS offered players a bypass through Apple’s in-app payments. This led them directly to the Fortnite store, where they could make purchases for V-bucks at a discounted price.

This was done so that the players wouldn’t have to bear the brunt of the 30% fee charged by Apple for every transaction. Naturally, this was a serious breach of Apple’s App Store policies and as a result, Fortnite was removed from the App Store.

A lot of disputes, war of words, and heated exchanges later, it all comes down to a point where the companies will face each other in the court. The proceedings will begin from May 2021 with the pretrial set to take place in April 2021.

Fortnite has over 350 million players worldwide. When the news of the ban hit the media, many assumed that it was Apple who would hurt more. Recently, a lawyer shared his thoughts on the case where he mentioned that Fortnite already has $1.2 billion worth of spends on iOS.

If Apple took 30% of this, it has taken home $360 million for itself. That is a huge revenue loss for Apple. Although looking at this from Epic’s perspective, it seems Tim Sweeney & Co are the bigger losers here.

Now, this seems like a tremendous loss of players and revenue for Epic Games. Considering Fortnite has 350 million players across platforms, around the world, Epic lost close to 120 million players in a flash. Apart from that, it also suffered further damage considering Google has also banned Fortnite from its Play Store. Even though players can still download Fortnite as an APK file for Android, it is still a prolific loss.

Regardless of this, Epic is still standing its ground against the might of Apple. The mere difference in the size of the two companies is enough to remind one of David and Goliath. This trial will have far-reaching effects on the gaming industry and will change the face of the tech industry as well.
