After beating American Youngster Frances Tiafoe, in a tough three setter, the Swiss Stan Wawrinka announced his withdrawal from the Basel Open 2019. The Swiss apparently suffered a back injury during the last game of the match against Tiafoe.

“The disappointment is huge”, said Stan Wawrinka. “Not to be able to play this match in Switzerland is very sad”, he continued. “But I need to listen to my body at this point.”

It was set to be an all Swiss Encounter, as his next opponent was compatriot Roger Federer, who has looked flawless in Basel so far. However, wawrinka’s withdrawal means taht Roger Federer will receive a walkover in his next round. Roger Federer has a 23-3 H2H record against Stan Wawrinka. The Swiss all hyped up for their encounter.

“Looking forward to a Swiss duell on Friday, happy that Stan is fighting back from injury, he has a fabulous career behind him already, he’s a legend, would love to play him although, of course, it’s never easy,” Roger Federer said. They previously played an exhilarating match at Roland Garros 2019 quarterfinals.

Stan Wawrinka battled hard to defeat Frances Tiafoe, who was playing aggressive tennis and was also serving smartly to keep Stan Wawrinka on his toes. It remains to be seen if he will participate in the Paris Masters 1000. The draw for the Paris Masters 1000 tournament will be released in a few hours.
