Reports have recently surfaced claiming that an £11.5 million deal has been agreed between Atletico Madrid and Tottenham Hotspurs for defender Toby Alderweireld.
Toby, who spent last season on loan at Southampton, impressed Premier League followers in his 26 appearances for the club. The Saints are understood to be keen on securing his services, but find themselves unable to match the money might of Tottenham Hotspurs.
The center-back, who can also be fielded on the right, made an impressive 35 tackles in the 2014-15 season while maintaining a success rate of 52%. The Saints were among the best defensive outfit in the Premier League last season and have much to thank Alderweireld for. His 31 interceptions, 151 clearances, and 21 blocks helped Southampton secure a top seven position despite a change in management and an exodus of players departing at the end of the 2013-14 season. Manager Ronald Koeman craves defensive solidity and Toby Alderweireld is the kind of strong and intelligent defender who fits the bill.
The Belgian international was also on Chelsea’s radar, but rejected their advances as he reportedly prefers White Hart Lane as his destination. The pull of the rich crop of Belgian footballers at Tottenham is assumed to have been the deciding factor as Alderweireld wishes to unite with the likes of Jan Vertonghen, Nacer Chadli, Mousa Dembele.
Some finer details are yet to be agreed upon. However, Chairman Daniel Levy has concluded most of the negotiations after having spent the weekend at the Spanish capital. With each passing moment the conclusion of the transfer appears increasingly likely. An official announcement from both clubs is expected in the coming few days.
