It’s rare that Inter Miami loses a game when Lionel Messi is on the pitch. Unfortunately, the game against Atlanta United proved to be one such rare occasion as the Herons succumbed 3-1. As always, La Pulga emerged as the bright spark with a stunning outside-the-box goal. But ultimately, it meant little as Tata Martino’s side floundered a golden opportunity to extend their lead at the top. The Argentine coach didn’t hold back as he termed his side’s performance as unrecognizable.

In the post-match presser, Martino laid bare his thoughts on Inter Miami’s display. The coach said, “We were unrecognizable, too many passing errors and a disorganized backline. We’ll work to improve that, today was a learning experience, credit to the opponent.” However, Lionel Messi and Co did receive a bit of fortune.

Martino added, “The only positive thing about the night is that Cincinnati lost.” FC Cincinnati had a golden chance to move top of the MLS standings after Inter Miami’s loss. But, they could not capitalize and were beaten 2-0 by Nashville SC. This means that Lionel Messi and Co have a slender 1-point lead at the top although Cincinnati has a game in hand.

The match today confirmed what was already obvious. Inter Miami lacks a decisive third attacker. Martino’s side has been too reliant on Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez this season. The left-winger for today, Robert Taylor had a particularly difficult outing. The Finnish star couldn’t even get a single shot away in 75 minutes. This is a key reason why the Herons are pushing to bring Angel Di Maria on board. Unfortunately, that transfer saga is anything but straightforward.

Recently, reports emerged that Di Maria has agreed to financial terms with the Herons. The Argentine playmaker’s current contract with Benfica ends in June. Signing Di Maria as a free agent would not have caused much complications for the MLS side. But, it has come to light that Benfica are planning to offer a new contract to their talisman. After all, with 17 goals and 15 assists last season, Benfica would find a replacement hard to come.

It remains to be seen how the situation pans out. As such, the next month’s Copa America could be pivotal. Already having announced international retirement, this will be the last time, Di Maria lines up for his country. Considering that he will be playing alongside Lionel Messi, La Pulga could try his hand at convincing Di Maria. Having the former Real Madrid man in attack would add a new dimension to Martino’s playstyle. Will the move happen though? Let’s wait and watch.
