In the second match, 75,784 spectators gathered in Sydney to watch Australia secure victory against the Republic of Ireland. This remarkable attendance figure even surpassed the numbers seen during last year’s men’s World Cup opening night in Qatar, which had around 67,000 attendees.
Among those astounded by Sydney’s enthusiastic crowd was USWNT star forward Megan Rapinoe. Overwhelmed with excitement, the USWNT star expressed her excitement by sharing a photo of the crowd with the caption “We deserve this”.

The USWNT will kick off their World Cup campaign as they face Vietnam in their opener on Friday, 21 July. This group stage encounter will mark the first-ever meeting between the USA and Vietnam. Making Vietnam the 57th different opponent the USWNT has faced in its history.
Australia and New Zealand 2023 marks the debut of eight nations in the Women’s World Cup. Vietnam is one of eight nations making its Women’s World Cup debut. Joined by fellow debutants Haiti, Morocco, the Republic of Ireland, Panama, the Philippines, Portugal, and Zambia. The USWNT also has an impressive record against AFC teams.
