Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds became co-chairmen of Wrexham AFC in November 2020, with an immediate investment of $2.5 million. The Hollywood actors raised the bar for the Red Dragons by bringing in sponsorship deals and signing new players.

Looking back on his time with Wrexham, McElhenney said, “I would say looking into the faces of the 40,000 people that came out in the parade after we won the league“. The owners and fans of Wrexham were both tearful when the team was promoted to the English Football League. The Reds finished at the top of the table with a record-breaking 111 points, despite struggling for two seasons. Thousands of supporters celebrated on the field with the team and their coach after their storybook ending to the league. Thus, McElhenney’s side will start their season in League II against MK Dons on August 5th.

The newly promoted League II side held on to a drew in their last warm-up game against Philadelphia Union II. Wrexham scored seven goals in their previous game against LA Galaxy and Manchester United, conceding only one. The Welsh side drew 1-1 with the Union Zolos after the match was delayed due to heavy rain in Subaru Park. Tom O’Connor scored for Wrexham before halftime putting them into the lead.
Despite conceding a late free kick to draw their final pre-season game against Union, Wrexham had a successful stint in the USA tour. They will be looking to start their new campaign with high spirits.
