Former England international, Ben Foster has announced his retirement from professional soccer for the second time. The 40-year-old goalkeeper is hanging up his boots, just two months after signing a one-year contract extension with League Two side, Wrexham AFC.

Ben Foster shared his retirement news with fans via Instagram in a brutally honest message. His video was re-shared by professional English golfer, Dan Bradbury with a sarcastic jab at Foster.

Ben Foster advised to “Stick to Golf”

The Wrexham shot-stopper, who came out of retirement in March to help the Dragons gain promotion to EFL League Two, has reversed his decision just after playing the first four games of the new league season. The former Manchester United goalkeeper conceded 13 goals in four games for Wrexham AFC this season, which includes five in a 5-5 draw at home against Swindon in the last game.

Foster shared his decision with fans on Instagram with his honest assessment and reasons. Out of all the fans, professional British golfer and DP World Tour pro, Dan Bradbury didn’t hold himself back in taking a jibe at Foster. Bradbury re-shared Foster’s video on his Instagram stories and stated: “Stick to the golf lad!”. The 24-year-old golfer also praised Foster by stating him as the “Absolute legend” of the game.

Foster bonded with Dan Bradbury while playing a 9-hole Golf match with him at the Wakefield Golf Club recently, which he shared on his YouTube channel, The Golfing GK. The former Wrexham goalkeeper is quite a personality over YouTube as he manages a few channels on the platform that includes, The Cycling GK, Fozcast – The Ben Foster Podcast, and The Golfing GK. Foster usually discusses a variety of things over these YT channels with different sports personalities and enjoys his cross-sport collaborations.

Ben Foster’s ‘brutally honest’ reason for his retirement

The ex-Premier League shot-stopper became a cult hero last season after saving a crucial penalty against Notts County last season. The penalty saw Wrexham beat Notts County by 3-2 which earned them a promotion to EFL League Two. Foster chose to sign a one-year contract extension for the Dragons but reversed his decision fairly soon.

Ben Foster delivered his verdict on the decision to retire from soccer for the second time and this time with an honest self-assessment. The 40-year-old goalkeeper said, “I just wanted to let you all know that I have decided to retire from professional football, yeah, I know, again. I think the timing is right, I feel sometimes you just have to be honest with yourself, brutally honest with yourself, and just admit you can’t really do what you used to do and it is a shame but I think being 40 years old it’s kind of expected as well.”

“I feel like there have probably been four or five goals already this season that I should be saving. It is weird because goals are going in and I’m thinking: ‘You should have saved that, how haven’t you saved that?’ And I think that’s the reason why I am retiring and I just know I can’t do what I used to do,” he added

“We will always have that 96th minute Notts County penalty save that will live long in my memories, genuinely one of the top three football [moments], concluded the keeper. With Ben Foster hanging up his boots, it will be a daunting task for Wrexham AFC to replace his position between the posts. Wrexham will be looking forward to bolstering their squad and challenging for the EFL promotion once again this season.
