The USWNT kicked off its FIFA World Cup 2023 campaign with a triumphant victory. The team put on a tremendous display of effort in their opening match of the tournament. Despite having a subpar performance, veteran Alex Morgan praised her teammates for securing the U.S. women’s team’s first win.
The co-captain of the Gals had a rare episode in the World Cup when she missed the penalty. The youngest player on the team stepped up and helped the USWNT beat Vietnam. Morgan was content with the team’s victory, even though she did not contribute much to the game.

How did Alex Morgan react to their first win in the FIFA World CUP 2023?
Alex Morgan had a fairly even impact on the game against Vietnam. She had one assist in the entire match for USWNT. The world champion failed to convert a penalty kick after her teammate, Trinity Rodman, was fouled in the box. She was denied by the rival goalkeeper, Tran Thi Kim Thanh. USWNT won the match with three goals to nil, but they could have scored more if not for some missed opportunities by co-captain Alex Morgan.

The San Diego Wave forward admitted her poor performance in their first game in the FIFA World Cup. Morgan said, “It wasn’t a good penalty for me and I know that. Definitely had a couple that I should have put away, for sure — penalty included”. The former Olympian had scored 121 goals in her 208 appearances for the states. She seemed hopeful about the next match and content with the team winning the first game.
Morgan added “But I’m glad that the team put three goals away and that we’re onto the next one. Happy with the result.” Meanwhile, USWNT put up a dominating show against the Asian side.

Although veteran players Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan did not have their best games, Sophia Smith and Lindsey Horan stepped up and provided the impact that the team needed to win. Coach Vlatko Andonovski wanted the team to do a little better by converting the opportunities and improving the positional play by the next game.
