The new number 10 of Inter Miami had a social outing with his family before being officially inaugurated by his club. Pictures were clicked with Antonela and their three sons in the supermarket. Alexi Lalas suggested Lionel Messi and his visit to Publix was actually staged. Lalas has also made more general statements about Messi’s talent and his impact on the game of soccer.

Lalas commented on Messi’s arrival in South Florida on his Alexi Lalas’ State of the Union podcast. He noted that Publix is one of the partners of Inter Miami. It is unlikely that Lionel Messi’s presence at a Publix supermarket was a mere coincidence, given the supermarket’s sponsorship of Inter Miami, the team he now plays for.

The former L. A Galaxy player said on Fox Soccer, “It takes a couple of clicks to go to the Inter Miami website and pull up their corporate partners, and woah! Amazing! Publix! There it is. ‘Brilliant, by the way. I loved every orchestrated second of it. But this is part of the give-and-take and this is part of what Messi brings to this situation”.

Alexi Lalas hinted that Lionel Messi could have afforded to shop at a more upscale store, such as Whole Foods, or that he could have had someone else do the shopping for him. It is possible that Messi’s decision to shop at Publix was a calculated move to generate publicity for himself and for Inter Miami. On the other hand, he manifested how the presence of Messi could change the whole trajectory of MLS and soccer in America.
