The USMNT are heading to the World Cup in Qatar, and fans are beyond ecstatic. They have a young, exciting team with players like Giovanni Reyna and Christian Pulisic leading the attack. However, the focus could turn to the goalkeepers this time around in Matt Turner and Zack Steffen.

Steffen has been the USMNT’s number one for several years now, and Gregg Berhalter does have a lot of faith in the 27-year-old. However, Steffen has had a torrid time at Manchester City and is still the club’s second choice, despite being there for three years.

Moreover, his lack of playing time at City has now resulted in errors seeping into his games. His error-laden showing for the USMNT against Costa Rica was followed by a dismal outing against Liverpool in the FA Cup Semi-final. It’s come to a point where his spot in the USMNT starting eleven has come under review.

Turner and his performances in the MLS

On the other hand, Matt Turner has been playing for MLS club New England Revolution since 2015. Turner is 27, (just like Steffen) and recently earned himself a move to the Premier League after joining Arsenal. His performances for New England have been eye-catching, and they have earned him a permanent spot in the USMNT too.

However, Turner is currently injured and will return to action in a few weeks. His team will really miss him, and it’ll be interesting to see if he can fully recover from his injury, because if he does, Steffen has a really tough competition on his hands.

Zack Steffen vs. Matt Turner

Turner has kept 30 clean sheets during his time with New England, a number that is relatively high for the number of goals the New England defense conceded initially. Turner already has 16 caps for the USMNT and would want to increase that number in the coming days.

Meanwhile, Zack Steffen has been playing at the highest level in the Premier League. He has seen better days at the club, but Steffen is still the starting goalkeeper in the USMNT. Only time will tell if he’ll lose his spot before the world cup, but at least the USMNT has two great keepers on its hands.
