USMNT international Zack Steffen is going through a tough period in his career right now. The Manchester City shot-stopper has failed to usurp Ederson Moraes as the No. 1 keeper at the club and has been the club’s second choice for three years now.

While he does have manager Pep Guardiola’s confidence for all cup competitions, Steffen has failed to achieve the high goals he must have set for himself. The American did have a permanent place between the sticks for his nation, but if his recent form is anything to go by, that could change very soon.

Zack Steffen is considering a loan move away from Manchester City

The US international made an error in City’s FA Cup semi-final tie against Liverpool, effectively handing Liverpool the trophy. He wasn’t exceptional for the rest of the match either, and this comes just after his horror show for the USA against Costa Rica.

According to ESPN reporter Sebastian Salazar, Steffen has been looking for a loan move just before the World Cup. He would want to move to a club where he can get some playing time and cement his spot in the USMNT before the team leaves for Qatar.

Former footballer Shaka Hislop had his own take on Steffen’s situation and revealed that he should’ve left City earlier. “He should’ve left City two years ago. He is 27 years old now, and given the high profile nature of his recent mistakes, I don’t know who takes a chance on him,” Hislop said.

Shaka Hislop’s pick for the USMNT number one

Hislop went on to address that Steffen was losing his spot as the USMNT’s starting keeper. New Arsenal signing Matt Turner has been solid between the sticks at New England Revolution and could quite possibly grab the goalkeeper’s spot away from Steffen.

He’s in real danger of losing his number one spot for the United States National team. He’s probably the most talented of the bunch of US keepers, but the fact that he’s not playing has allowed Matt Turner to close the gap and possibly surpass him,” Hislop added.
