Lionel Messi is one of the greatest players of all time. However, at 34, he doesn’t have a lot of time left at the top level of football. After the season that he had with Paris Saint Germain, some fans think the downfall has already begun.

Messi won the Ballon d’Or in 2021 for his performances for FC Barcelona. He put up outstanding numbers and won the golden boot for his contributions for the club. However, Messi only managed to score 6 league goals for PSG this season. He did provide 14 assists, but his numbers were nowhere near the heights they touch every single season.

Lionel Messi makes a promise to PSG fans

In an interview with TyC Sports, Messi revealed the factors that affected his performance for PSG this year. He revealed that the shock of leaving FC Barcelona was too much for him and he couldn’t understand what happened. However, he did say that he’ll have a much better season with PSG next year.

“Next season will be way better for me with Paris Saint-Germain, I’m sure. It was not easy after that crazy summer. It was really difficult to understand what happened, I wasn’t expecting to leave Barcelona – it was a shock,” Messi said.

Barca weren’t supposed to let Lionel Messi go and had even struck a deal with him. However, that deal violated the La Liga regulations and hence the two parties had to disengage. Messi had no choice but to leave his club.

Messi reveals that his age was a factor

The Argentinian forward went on to say that his age also played a role in his problems. Messi had spent 20 years with Barca, and leaving the club would always have been hard. He did add that it would’ve been easier if he was younger, but at the time of the transfer he didn’t want it.

After a lifetime in the same place, it’s not easy at my age. It’s one thing to do it when you’re younger and you want to, but at the time I didn’t want to and I didn’t imagine or expect it,” he added.
