AFCON was the biggest international competition this year other than the forthcoming World Cup. Senegal won the entire competition for the first time in their history after they beat Egypt in the final in a heavyweight clash between Liverpool stars Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.
The entire tournament was extremely entertaining, as both Salah and Mane were at their best. They met in the final and it was a goalless draw before the game was decided by a penalty shootout. Senegal had a lot of chances to take the lead, including a missed penalty from Sadio Mane.

Egypt keeper Mohamed Abou Gabal reveals what Mohamed Salah told him
Gabal saved Sadio Mane’s penalty in the first half to keep Egypt in the game. He made several more saves and continued his amazing performances from the semi-final, where he saved a few penalties to help beat Cameroon in a penalty shootout.
The keeper talked about that penalty save and revealed how Mohamed Salah helped him save Mane’s penalty. Salah came up to Gabal before the penalty and asked him to go to the right side.
“Salah told me: Mane would shoot to the right side, he is coming now because he knows what I am saying.’ Mane said to me: ‘I will shoot on the left,’ then Salah replied ‘Let’s see,’” Gabal said.

Senegal coach talks about their AFCON win
Senegal head coach Aliou Cisse, was ecstatic after their win and talked about his team’s mentality. They held on to their guns and won in the penalty shootout after some heroics from their goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy. Liverpool star Sadio Mane converted the last penalty to end Senegal’s long wait to win it all.

In February 2002, Aliou Cisse missed one of the penalties in the AFCON final causing Senegal to lose to Cameroon.

“We’re African champions. It’s been long, it’s been hard, and there have been complicated moments, but we never gave up. This was a hard match too; we missed the penalty, and there were other chances we weren’t able to take, but the boys never abandoned the task. This proves the mental strength of this generation,” Cisse said.
