Ukraine’s fabulous campaign to make it to the World Cup ended in tears after they lost to Wales in their play-off final. Gareth Bale made sure that his side made it across the finish line after his free-kick was deflected into the Ukrainian goal by Andriy Yarmolenko.

The West Ham star could’ve let it run, but he decided to head the ball instead, completely wrong-footing his goalkeeper. They couldn’t find the back of the net during the entire game and the match ended up with a score of 1-0 to Wales.

It has been a tough road for the former Real Madrid superstar in the past few years. While his form for Wales has never wavered, Bale struggled with injuries during his final few years at Madrid, barely getting any game time.

This season wasn’t any different, and while he did win the Champions League and La Liga with Madrid, he didn’t play any significant part in that.

It was difficult. I haven’t played too much football these last three or four weeks because of my back spasm, but the most important thing was to get through. I was running on empty but we’ve got good people on the bench to do a good job,” Bale added.
